"Run fast" seems to be tha motto of the Huns. Thank the tanks for gasless Sun- days, but at the same time don't 'forget to also thank them for glori- ous victories. The kaiser calls it his "death-de- fying mavy." It doesn't come out of its lair to defy the British navy, that is certain, ' Personally we are in favor of tax- ing heavily every newspaper that has an excess of war-prophets, ro- marks the Dallas Neys. The Kingston Industrial Exhibi- tion will be on very soon, and it should have claim to our interests next to the great war. Can: you recall, asks the Regina Leader, anyone sitting peacefully in church on Sunday being run over by an 'automobile? nisi The Rome, N.Y. Sentinel claims that when a man gets married So escape the draft the bride at least shows much courage. 'Wa auto slow up the autos on Sunday. It is the right thing to do. Shut off the gasoline on the Lord's day. And go to church for a change, And the baseballers went on strike! . We thought this was what they were paid to do, but they struck because they did not want to strike! If any Kingstonian has to go to the country on Sunday for a golden wedding event, let him hitch Old Dobbin to the chaise and sally forta. There is one happy thing about the saving of gasoline and that is 'the use of embalming fluid will pe lessened and funeral expenses sav- ed. Out of this war we ought to se=f cure some regular plan for drill in our public schools that will help our young people to think and act quick- ly and efficiently. We have had such a surfeit of #ood war news that we have ove:r- ogked the disappearance of the U- ts from the Atlantic coast. The British evidently got them. 3 {A general election iS expected in _Britain' in December. So far the "Britsh public are perplexed aver 'what issues will bo fought over. The business men are ex- pressing alarm over this new policy of labor, and denounce it ag imposs- ible. Labor leaders defend the atti- tude on the theory that after the war there will not be sufficient labor for all HELPING THE COLLEGE. The Board of Education was wise in giving Queen's University a chance to prove how essential it is to maintain a Faculty of Education department here. It ungrudgingly gave the college its support and en- dorsement in its work. The facul'y hitherto was held by departmental officials to be deficient in some re- spects and Queen's was told where improvement was 'necessary. The sympathetic Minister of Education decided to give Queen's a year in which to make good, and the college and faculty officials planned for the strengthening of the school. The Board of Education continued the use of the schools for practice pur: poses, and expressed the hope that the faculty school might be made a success, Eastern Ontario needs Queen's and the Faculty of Educa- tion for teacher training. The young people can get advantages here that might not be available if they hal to go to the big cities for them. This has been proven in hundreds of cases. Education of the best typo at home will be utilised, and Queen's can supply this. She does not want to have her teaching training me- thods absorbed into one big pro- vineial school, and so is &pending money to maintain an efficient do- partment here. Every citizen who feels a pride in the local college wil commend the Board of Education for helping to its fuli exbtent so worthy a cause. THE AIRPLANE IN COMMERCE. The great possibilities of the air- plane as a commerce carrier ara pointedly suggested by the success of the Toronto-Ottawa mail service by air and by similar successes in the United States. Having demon- strated the possibilities of trans- mitting mail through the air, the post office department should ex- tend the service to other Canadian cities. It can be truly said that carrying mail by airplane is no long- or an experiment. It is a demon- strated success. Its development {and exteasion after the war are cer- tain. In this particular branch of the commercial life of the country the principle of the heavier- than- the-air flying machine, with which Prof. Langley so tragically experi mented only a few years ago, has es- tablished its practical value. would be a rash prophet who would attempt to predict that the airplans, now 8 sa'cess as a mail earrier, will not soén be drafted inte mors fu! -{ They Ho | BXtended commerefal service. This, too, is the financial policy of the British Exchequer, and Canada can learn something from these two notable examples. These policies, it is hop- ed, will not only keep down the na- tional debt, but, if the public is suf- flently intelligent, wipe out the war debt in a few years.
