As a spectacle depicting the life in the northern sections of Africa, "The of Allah," presented on Fri- ght at the Grand Opera House, superb No expense has been ed by the managers to bring real- ty: into their production, and cameis, 10rs€es, goats, as well as a troupe of pv do much to enliven the play. The action of the play, however, is tedious in the first two parts, bright- ening up considerably towards the end when the discovery has been made that the heroine, Domini: Enfilden, has been married to a Trappist monk, who escaped from his monastery after the eternal vows of silence had been taken. With the elimination of several scenes, which, though masterpieces of scenic art, and marvels of beauty, are not essential, and retard the action of the play, the production would be much more appealing As it the introduction of such scenes. and the long speeches of the cast make for monotony. Notwithstanding the diffictlties un< der' which they endeavor to unfold the really excellent story. the members of the cast displayed ability in"their roles on Friday night. Paul' Gilmore as Joris Androvsky, the outcast monk, was splendidly mystical and convine- ing. Miss Edna Archer Crawford as Domini Enfilden, his wife, who was under the spell of the Sahara in the Garden of Allah, assumed her role with quiet grace. The cast as a whole was. capable, the scenic effects were wonderful, but the plot is in need of improvement. is lice are going to see that everybody is doing something Everybody is talking about the success of the fair, and pointing out how it is growing from year to year. And with a little more "pep" from year to year, it is bound to get big-| ger. The question of securing more space will soon have to be consid-| ered, | Even police constables are not im-' mune from pickpockets. The fact that a rural constable was "touched™ for $20 while standing on a street car go- ing to the fair, has caused some citi-' zens to remark that a pickpocket is no respector of persons, The small boys had but one regret about the fair and that was because it was too windy for the balloon to go up. However, it was better to have had the wina than the rain, as' the rain would have spoiled the at- tendance. } How did you fare on the games of chance on the Mid Way? Those Baby dolls were eagerly sought for and many a penny was spent in an en- deavor to land one. "I spent about $20 one day trying to get one," remarked one citizen to the Whig, "and could not get the lucky number." Another fellow came along and spent 10 cents, and walked off with a doll. "Wasn't that enough to take the heart oui of you?" \ - HE RERYN be od Late Mrs, Frank Bryant.
