JOHN This Kingston ' Missionary in Turkey Was Interned Dur= ing the War. A despatch from St. John, N.B, says: Included in the passengers on the Corsican to-day was Miss. KE. McCallum, of Kingston, Ont.,, who was Congregational missionary in Turkey in charge of an American school, and was interned at the out- break of the war in Symrna. For the first two years she was allowed to go on teaching, but after that she was forbidden to do so. Dur- ing this period, however, she was not forced to suffer any hardships, as the governor of Smyrna was rath- er friendly to the British, and treat- ed his prisoners better than they did in any other part of Turkey. Miss McCallum said it seemed as if they realized from the first what the outcome would be and acted accord- ingly. MOTHER AND BABY SAVED FROM: DROWNING Broke Through th the lce--Res~ cued bY De. W. THE G)W.V.A. ENDORSES Sentencing Defaulters, At'the meeting of the G.W.V.A. Monday evening the chairman of the membership committee outlined the "offensive" which would be under- taken in the near future to boost the membership of this branch, and ask- ed for the co-operation of all mem- vers on this subject. The land settle- meént scheme was brought up for dis- cussion and it was resolved that the dominion executive be co-operated with in their efforts to obtain legisiz- tion on this subject passed .+hToUEh Parliament as early as possible in the coming session. Many interest- ing points were brought out in argu- ment on this subject, the best amongst whioh was the fact that the Government stated in their propagan- da on this sttbject that there were no available lands held by the rown which were of value for the purpose of cultivation by returned men; or very little, and that they were pur- chasing more lands for this purpose, at it is understood a tremendous cost, and re-selling the same to re- turned men, the argument put for ward was why could not the Govern- in bulding MUST BE | ity.
