That He Visit Of the Rodger Explained Ontario Housing Much Had Learned on Recent Toronto, e City Friday ed to recom "The housing comm Council met at the ( day agernoon, and de me nd to the council that advantage ken of the Ontario Housing Act This degision was only arrived at af- ¢ discussion on lhe provisions of the aet Ald. Rodger reported the result of his visit to Toronto, and the replies he received to the questions put to the director of housing. The director ruled that the city. could not issue™ debentures and go into the housing buginess without operating unger the act. He also said that the city wonld ave to make its own ar- rangements for the salaries of the commission -and that the provincial government would send experts to the city to note the progress of| the work and to give expert advice as to the plans and' specifications of the houses being built The only way in which the coupdil can control the hofising commission is by inserting in the by-law to be submitted to council a definite amount which it could not exceed without coming back to the council. There is no way in which alderman can serve upon the commission The reason given by the director for this clause was that it would pravent any people from saying that the aldermen were working for votes This answer caused much merriment amongst the members of the committee. The l director also said that any reason- able plan for a house! which had satisfactory arrangements, would be approved, Ald. Litton mentioned the high cost of building at the present time. He sald that in the last seven years the had increased one hundred per cent., and that a substantial de- crease might take place in the fu- ture. He was of the opimion that, owing to this the city might lose money. The need for houses was ad- mitted by all the members of the committe, and it was decided that they recommend to council that a re- solution be passed empowering the city of Kingston to take advantage of the act, and that & by-law as required under the act be introduced at the next council meeting The housing act, will, therefore, be one of the principal 'subjects up for discussion when the city council meets. McKenzie, the Canadian war correspondent, who is (o lecture on his experiences at the front, and is to show the official Canadian ~ films in the City Hall on Monday evening, is well known to many of the officers and men of the 21st Bat- talion. He was with Lieut.-Col. El- mer Jones, the commanding officer of that unit, just before he died of his wounds. He thinks very highly of the Kingsten unit, ad in his book, "Canada's Day of Glgry," he tells of many incidents in which the Kingston battalion played a part. Mr. Me- Kenziends a vivid lecturer, and, speak- ing as he goes with first hand infor- mation of the life of the Canadians at the front, his appearance here should be of great interest to Kingston peo- ple. The 21st Battalion Club were very fortunate In securing him for this city, as his services are in great | demand all over Canada. Daring this week he has lectured in places so far apart as Winnipeg and Cobalt, is a great demand for tickets fot this splendid evening's entertain. ment and education, and a large crowd is expected. Tickets are 35 gents, and are on sale at Best's drug stoge To Be on Called to Paris. Kingston now has seventeen "post- jes" insgead of fifteen. Those Ports mouth Eirls have nothing on the Kingston maidens now in the matter of receiving letters They get let- ters hy the score now, and this was the reason for putting on two more letter carriers By refusing to adopt daylight sav- ing, the little village of Sunbury hs got itself in the "limelight" at any rate.
