STE MAY BE ADJUSTED N TWO WEEKS T TIME (IS AN OPINION EXPRESSED. No Change in the Locomotive Works Situation--The Men are Sanguine Respecting the Outcome, The situation regarding the strike of the Canadian Locomotive Com- pany's employees remains unchanged This was the statement made Satur- ddy morning by Mr. Wallace, presi- dent of the company. The plant is clerical staff is dispersed. The workmen ap- parently refrain from loafing in the vicinity of the works. Their rooms on Brock street are thronged every hour of the day, and all seem to be very sanguine respecting the outcome of their action. No estimate is given of the time expected to elapse before a settlement is reached, and they can ofice more resumé work. Negotiations have not taken place in an endeavor to reach a settlement since the walkout. It fs stated among the men that when the company received the de- mand for an eight-hour day and an advance in wages, the reply was' "that when five companies in Canada employing over five hundred men can meet the demand, we will do the same," but before making any in- quiry respecting the position of the company the men took a strike vote, and it went 10 to 1 for a walkout, in- dicating the thoroughness of the agi- tation that had been carried on up to that point. The local executive states that the resporise has been practically unani- mous throughout Ontario, the. last report received from Toronto stating that 4,000 men were out there. Mr. Findlay, president of the Kingston branch of the Metal Work- ers' Federation, states that the Fed- aration does not pay any indemnity to strikers, but that this must be paid by the particular union to which the men belong, and the amount {is determined by the unions themselves. This does not seem to be well under- stood by the men of the different trades, as many of them think that they are to be paid by the Metal Workers" Federation, with which they amalgamated a few weeks ago. Tp to the present time nothing has taken place toward a settlement of the dispute. Mr. Findlay stated that it might possibly be adjusted in two weeks' time, but no change was expected within that time, Volun- teers have been called for picket duty. SATURDAY'S MARKET. A new business enterprise has been launched in Kingston by the formation of the Kingston Truck and, Cartage Company. The prin- cipals in the new venture are Geo. E. Smith and John C. Hunter, who are too well known to need any. in- troduction to Kingstonians. The decision of t Shedden Forward- ing Company to cease business leav- es an opening for a progressive Cartage company to fill the vacancy, and this is what the new company proposes te do. It will operate a number of motor lorries of five-ton capacity for heavy freight, and also a number of lighter ones for light. ter work. One or two of these lor 'ries are already in commission, and others are expecied to reach the city soon. The company is thus splendidly prepared tor the trans- portation of railway and steamship freight and general business. Its announcement to ihe public appears on another page of to-day's issue.
