TO THE CONGREGATION OF ZION PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH... Rev. John D. Boyd, Pastor for Twen- ty-nine Years, Reviews His Work as He Retires From the Pastorate, A well-filled ehurch greeted the Rev. J. D. Boyd, of Zion Preshyterian Church, on Sunday morning as he spoke his farewell message as pastor, after twentyémine years of service. Mr. Boyd initiated the work as. a stu- dent, and gave himself heartily to the work of the church and commu- nity all these years, and it was no easy matter for either pastor or peo- ple, in their mutual affection for one another, to go through the ordeal of yesterday. Mr. Boyd based his ad- dress on II. Tim. i, 18, "Hold fast the sound teaching which ye heard from me." He said: "To-day I feel that I can rely on you, my tried com- panions in service, to pass on the gospel of faith and leve that has in- MONDAY, MAY 26, 1919. i WE By spired us, to others. Thé gospel that redeemed me brought, me to you years mgo, because I felt that it had efficacy to heal the ills of this com- munity, and I have not been alto- gether disappointed. Duriig these years over three hundred families united with this church, and 450 peo- ple professed faith in Christ. Of this number about seventy families and 130 members are still in active connection with the church. Over one hundred have been called to their reward, the majority of them faithful wokkers, and at least a hun- dred othews are giving to-day a good account of themselves all over Can- ada and some in the foreign field. All the organizations of the 'church are in good standing, with balances to their credit, 'With a 'shurch free from debt and a splendid manse, that could not be bull to-day for less than $8,000, all paid for but $2,500; this church should have a bright future. 'The gospel that I preached and practised," sald 'the . speaker, "ap- plied to the whole man. = I gave my- self therefore freely to the work of the community, city college, and presbytery. 1 believe that the life of this congregation is the richer to- day because of these servites, and it was always a sourcé of pleasure and recreation to join with others in these enterprises, You have always al lowed me the fullest freedom in choice of work, We are not many, but we 'are free from cliques and grouchers, and a unitéd and hearty peovle are sure to make good. "I hope now to oceupy a pew with you for some time, till my health is recuperated; and give hearty support to whiatever - successor yon may choose, and I shdll not expect him to move in the same groove that I did. I Will not say farewell now, but 1 thank you sincersly not only for your co-operation in the past, but also for your kind appreciation of my ser- vices In asking me to withdraw my resignation, take a rest. and then re- turn to the work . thought wise to do, but as a member with you I hope-to do the best I can Tor tha commupity.
