Kirkpatrick Phone 86 Clarénece, St. B68w, Fes) | HIGH COST OF LIVING COMMIT- TEE CALLED A BLIND. Late Organizer Declares That Zov- ernment Knows Perfectly Well the Cause of the High Cost of Living, Mr. Noble, international organizer of the Electriciams, addressed the Confederation of Metal Workers on Wednesday afternoon. He said it was not the work of the organizes to settle troubles that was the duty of the rank and file, He dealt in an extensive manner with the labor situation at the present time, He sald that nothing was to be hoped from a parliamentary committee ap- pointed to investigate who is rv n- sible for the high cost of livin uch a commitiee was merely a blind be- cause the government knew perfect- ly well the cause of the high cost of living and who got the profits, He did not approve of the personnel of the committee appointed as all the members outside of the labor mem- I's were representatives of the manu lacturers. It was impossible to get a majority Teport favorable to the workers--all that could be gr ed for was a minority report. " One member of the opposition in the House of Commons advocated compulsory arbitration to be forced at the point of the bayonet. It was clearly evident that labor could not depend upon any political party, the workers mist elect their own repres- entatives. The speaker of the work of the late food controller wide was 4 magnate and never made any ef- fort to reduce or control the price of food. He denied that labor received any German gold, © manufactur- ers were the men who got it. He did not think they were entitled to the profits they were getting at the present, The promise. of better wages, the homes and conditions of work was never fulfilled and it nev- er would be, The workers hdd to get them by their own aetion. The workers could do no worse than the capitalists, but they can do a great deal better. The workers produced the surplus earnings in all industry and the in- dustries were of mo value without the human element represented in labot. = If an amimal becomes sick it Is looked after but it is not the case with the worker because the manufacturer does not have to pay anything to replace him. : "At the coming dominion election you have get to selevt the men to re- present you---not the lawyers who pass legislation purposely defective in order to obtain liagation." The organizer told of' lawyers who played false. The workers can legislate just as well as the lawyers Seventy-five per cent. of the law on the statute books is of no value what- ever, He declared that the workers have 4 hgat on uheir hands now that they 'aave got to join. He warned his hearers not to be led asiray by tne news Teports from Winnipeg sirike. 'The strike 18 going to continue until the workers win 'out. T'ney are not getting a living wage. A A A | SAA ETHEL BARRYMORE'S PLAY. Was Greatly Enjoyed At the Grand On Wednesday Night. Ethel Barrymore and her com- pany of artists made the audienge at the Grand last night forget that the temperature was eighty-five de- grees, so interestingly did they pres- ent R. C. Carton's comedy 'The Off Chance." The Barrymores have been for several generations known to the American stage, the women folk as well as the men, and Ethel Barry- more to-day occupies a foremost place among the com~diennes of the finer and subtler Sorts In the role of Lady Cordonnell, Miss Barrymore achieves a great triumph.' She is the artist always, but her personality is charming throughout the play. She is happy and unconventional in her acting. The audience liked her and was generous in its applause. The company associated with Miss 'Barrymore is as near perfect as it could be. Edward Emery as Mayor Bagleigh, reminded many of an aged Kingston colonel. He played his rolé in & way that made him a prime fav- orite. Two other very clever actors were Mr, Phinner as Lord Cardon- nell and Mr, Brennan as Bayne. Mr. Percival as Brunson, a solicitor; Mr, Boyd as the Duke of Burchester, Mr, Ashford as the prudish father, Miss Rousillan as Maria and Eva Le Gal- Henne as the young duchess all play- ed their roles in @ way that made them fitvinto a perfectly produced play, The mince parts were also well taken. The production is beau- tifully staged and the scenes are laid] in England. The play tells the story of a threatened divorce and how it Opening of the Straw Hat Season Straw and Panama hats are here in abundance.
