Moreover, country dances are drawing city folks several miles from Kingston nearly every evening, and even staid Wolfe Island has provided facilities for dances. Some dancers motor as far away as Gan anoque for a dance. Nothing like so many dances have been: known in the city before amd the young people seem to have be- come dance mad. During the war the functions had to be curbed some- what but now they have been resum- ed with full force. In the city, the dance balls are un- der police supervision and every ef- fort i8 made by the managers to keep their tone at a high level. Moon dances are still permitted but suffi- cient illuminfition to keep the rooms fairly light must be kept on at all times. Nearly every orchestra in the city has engagements * for = weeks and months ahead. Recently the musicl- ans of the city formed a branch of the musicians' union and now only union members are allowed to play together. They have all the work they can handle and are reaping a harvest at city dandes and at those which 'are held in the country. The days of the turkey trot, the bunny hug and the other fads that 'prevailed before the war are - done ahd now the fox trot, the one step and the waltz are in their glory. Various new, dances such 'as the shimmy, thie lip-trot, the syncopated rag and other exaggerated forms of introduced in. public in Kingston and every ef- fort will Be made to stop them as it is not considered that they are fit for public exhibition. ,In the meantime the dance craze reigns supreme and the orgy of pre- +3] war danding seems to be recurrent. 'BOW TO THE PUBLIC The Kingston Symphony Orchestra Appears on Thursday The Kingston Symphony Orches- tra will make its first lie appear- ance at the City Hall on Thursday evening, and music lovers are fook- ing forward with much eagerness; for it is the first atyempt of the lo- cal instrumental mysicians to form an organisation of this kind dur- ing the past twenty years. It is pure- 1y a voluntary effort carried Jout by a number of enthusiasts, who desire to. encourage artistic expression and pfter opportunities for the develop- ment, of local musical talent, thus raising the standard of culture in the city and giving it a place in the musical world--a patriotic endeavor deserving of the most generous sup- The features 'process. port of our citizens generaily.
