Matter Was Again Under Discussion at Mesting of the Village Council Monday Night--John Mills Ap- pointed Tax Collector. The question of a war memorial Was under discussion again at a meeting of the Portamouth Council, held on Monday night, and it was decided to hold a public meeting in the village hall on Tuesday evening next, August 12th, for the purpose of receiving the views of the people. The Council has a proposition to put before the people. It was decided to construct a con- walk on Front street from Main to Mowat avenue, provided the cost is not too excessive.' John Mills was appointed tax col- lector in the place of James McMas- ter, deceased. The matter of the appointment 'of a new constable was laid over, Ports- mouth is a law-abiding place, and it is felt that the village can get along without the services of a constable. Summerby, a school in- spector, died in Paris on Sunday, De- ceased was for a number of years principal of Wellington (now Syden- ham) school in this city. He was re- garded as an extremely efficient tea- er. Deceased was In his sewenty- third year, was in Paris the previous day, and shortly after returning was stricken with apoplexy, from which he passed away, never rallylug. Mother St. Agnes, Mother Superior of the Congregation de No- tre Dame, goes to Ottawa, where she has been appointed Mother Supe- rior of a similar institution situated on Gloucester ¥treet. She has been the executive head in Kingston for the past five years,and is distinguigh- ed as an educator, organizer and business woman. She leaves for Ottawa this week, Sister Superior 8t. Mary Alexander, of Ottawa, who succeeds her at the local institution, is well known in Kingston, having been a teacher and assistant at the Notre Dame Convent.
