"I muse the word murder advisedly because, if the little fellow had been killed the driver of the car would have been guilty of taking human life without the shadow of an excuse for his criminal carelessness and com- plete disregard of conditfons which should govern any man with enough brains to run a wheelbarrow. No credit is due the cowardly lunatic or idiot that the Little lad is not now & mangled corpse. "The bumper of the car struck the child, hurling him to the ground, and as the car passed over him part of his clothing caught and he was dragged twenty or thirty yards until the cloth fortunately gave way. A dozen' people shouted to the driver, who must have known that he had struck the boy, but the coward in- creased his speed apparently indif- ferent to the fate of his little vietim. Dr. Mylks attended to the injuries of the child, who fainted twice during the dressing of the cuts and bruises with which his head and body are covered. The same evening, Thomas Purdy, driving down the Sydenham road, narrowly escaped being trun into at the corner hy another motor fdiot. Motorists, who A deliberately risk killing or maiming people, are not strangers to the dangerous na- ture of the corner where the York and Sydenham roads meet at Ca- taraqul. Motorists rarely cause aoc- cidents on grades or at corners with which they are unfamiliar, No, the speed fiends are not strangers passing through the village for the first time, nor are théy residents of the imme- diate vicinity. They are fools who live in Kingston and who should have their heads examined before they are granted licenses to drive automo- biles. : "It has been freely predicted for some time that there will be a fatal accident at Oatargqui corner. There have already been several minor ac- cidents and many miraculous escapes. Meanwhile the council has done noth- ing to safeguard the public. .There are no speed limit signs and no at- tempt has been made to get after the motor fiends who make a race course of the main streets. The Sydenham road at its junction with the York road is very narrow and extremely dangerous, but could easily be (wid- ened another ten feet. The county engineer and township reeve know this and know how dangerous the corner is, and yet do nothing and will probably continue In thelr sommnolent condition until some one is killed or terribly injured." OFFICIAL; STATEMENT Sent to the Press From the Metal Trades Council, 1 In accordance with an order pass- ed by this council the following sign- od statement hus been authorized to be given to the press: "The situation between the Cana- dian Locomotive Company and its employees at the present time is a deadlock, four of the unions vot to reject the written proposition of the company and three to accept, as units, whereas if the rank and file of the men are counted the offer of the company would simply be turned down by an overwhelming majority. Up to the present day only seventy: seven men of all the crafts combined, affiliated with the Metal Trades Council, who went on strike in this city on May 9th last, have voted to accept the company's offer, notwiths standing any réports to the contrary, "However, there is one point all unions are agreéd on, and that is, believing their cause to be a just one, they are willing to submit their case to a board of arbitration. The only union objecting to this course was the boilermakers. "It is the intention of this council to Have our executive meet the civie committee this week and try and ef- fect a settlement of this strike.
