MAY HAVE I REANSTITUTED THE BOLDT CASTLE IN STATE OF DECAY, -- { Birds Build Nests on Marble Shelves in Great Mansion--Would Make a Fine Hotel. One of the wonderful sights of the Ihousand Islands is Hart Island, which contains the famous Boldt mansion, Thousands of Kingsto- nians have seen and admired this great mansion, and they will be in- terested In the loHowing editorial in g | the Watertown, N.Y,, Times: at was an interesting news story in last night's Times, which told of the forthcoming meeting at the River to discuss ways of adver- tising and popularizing he Thousand Island distrio The gathering fis called for August 19th. The arti cle implies that one of the things of interest which will be discussed will be a new hotel on the river, It is badly needed, The necessity of a large hostelry is emphasized espeoial- ly since the automobile has brought 80 many short-stay travellers to the The new hotel which Water- town is about to open will serve its purpose in accommodating many who come into northern New York gto visit the river territory, but the John McKay, Limited "THE FUR HOUSE" RRO NR a Dance anytime~the Victrola is always ready! "When o ng your glasses let us U our personal attention in fitting and adjusting Thousand Island district itself would Bl | bo benefited materially by a hotel in the very centre of the river section. Such a meeting as is planned for August 19th might well take some steps to make use of the Hart Island g | property, owned by the Boldt estate, which to-day is simply a decaying castle. There has been much talk of turning this property into a hotel, but nothing has heen done in the matter ,although the article from the hotel trade paper quoted yesterday indicates that the movement has been revived again, It must be that the owners of the property would like to make some use of the property. Here is an expenditure of over two million dollars, The great castle which Mrs. Boldt was building at the time of her death stands as it was left the day she died, over fifteen years ago. The exterior of the.building has been completed, the principal work in the interior has been done, but the entire edifice is open to the public. Birds nest on the marble shelves in the rooms and pull away the eotton work on the exterior of the electric wires that go everywhere through the building. The property oceu- pies a commanding pogition on the river, and with & comparatively small outlay could be iande a wonderful summer hotel. Tt is said that the original plans called for 100 distinct suites of rooms. Much of the inte. rior marbla came from Ttaly , Hart Island has an interesting his- tory. Originally held by the state with all other northern New York property, {t was not included in the original grant to Macomb. the boun- dary question not having heen deter- mined between the United States and Canada, Dec. 11th, 1828, the state granted a patent to Hlisha Camp, ennveying title to the greater part of the islands in the St. Lawrence and Hart Island wag included. For many years it was carried on the records ag Hemlock Island. and vas f0 known when vurchased by 3 Kirke Hart, of Albion. N.¥., from the Azdriah Walton estate fn 1871. It took the name of Wart Island from its new owner, The property was nurchased by Mrs, Louise A. Boldt from HEdward W. Deway, of New York, on July 1st, 1805. According to the deed, ax recorded in the coun- ty clerk's office, the island contains about three acres . . The Boldt castle was started about 1900. i WARDEN CREIGHTON LEAVING. Who Sent the Prince a Card of Verses on the Occasion of His Investure Nine ¥| Ago. Nine yelirs ago on the 13th July, ! when H.R.H. was but a boy of seven- | teen, the elaborate function of inves- | titure took plage at Carnarvon amid much Welsh enthusiasm, the sweet | singing of the trained children being & noticeable feature. Notwithstand- ing the busy excitement attending the ausplees occasion, the Prince of Wales through his secretary, gracefully acknowledged the little decorated | card of verses sent him by Mrs. Mac- | lean Browett, of Kingston, express ing good wishes for his future career. With the nine years that have passed the value of that note in its envelope with the crown device of modest di- mensions, has vastly increased and in treasured by Mrs. Browett as something worth while to pass on to her heirs. Below are given the acknowledgement and also the con- tents of the card: The emblematic water-color deco- rations bordering the card only 6 x 10 in size, were simple and appro- priate, A clear sky and promising sunrise at top; then down the right- nd side a noble Michigan elm tree, typical of manhood, finishing at bot- tom with a stretch of calm blue sea and a sandy beach--the latter for the royal "foot-prints which perhaps an- other geeing would take heart again." On the left side tiny sprigs of Swiss Edele-wiss for the Prince--émblem of purity--forgetsme-nots for Vie- | toria, his great-grandmother; wood | violets "bowed down after rain," for | his lamented grandfather, the Peace- maker, and for the parants of H.R.
