MeA REPLY OF METAL WORKERS WITH REGARD TO WAGES PAID AT LOCOMOTIVE WORKS They Say They Have Always Been Willing to Arbitrate the Differen~ ces Between Themselves and the Company. Kingston, Aug. 22 --(To the Edi- tor): The Metal Trades Council de- sire to make the following statement in answer to an article appearing in a local paper Yécterddy to the effect that if a board of congiliation was all that stood between the corapany aud ite striking employees, why was the offer not made before. I wish to re fér to my ctatément wherein I stated the mer Lave always been willing ta arditrate their case, also to the reply of the compary to the olvie committee when the strike was only four wecks old. that tlhe time was rol opportune for outside intecferen. ¢s. Thiz was publistes in the logal papers and I thought was still fresh in every eitizen's mird. Furthérmare tile exeeutli ¢ of this cousc:i has time and again asked for arbitration dur- ing the conferences with the com- pany and been refused. The article goes on to state that many of the machinists make more than 80c per hour piece work, Per- mit me to change that and say that a very few men make anywhere near 80c an hour plece work, atid also to add that the plece work prices were not advanced when the hours were reduced from 10 to 9 a day. 'Again when Mr. Wallace was asked if he would adjust the prices to suit the adjustment of hours per week; he refused point blank, Regarding the bollermakérs piece work, we refuse to discuss their rates as that it a matter for them. selves, they having withdrawn from this council. Of the remaining un- ions affiliated with us, four of them do not work piece work and two do, what this council wants is a living minimum wage sufficient for himself and family to be paid every man, and if the company cares to pay more than that, well and good that's their business not ours. Some time ago the govérnment ap- pointed a commission to go through the country and ascertain the &mal- lest amount of money required per year to maintain a family in decent circumstances. They reported that it would require $1,650, now then if we take and figure on the 45-hour week basis, after deducting the eight statuary holidays, it gives us a fraction over 68¢ an hour, working full time and no sickness. Now note the compiny's best offer in compari- son; patternmakers, 72 2-9 cents an hour, minimum and maximum; ma- chinists, 56 2-3 cents minimum 61 cents maximum; labourers 38% cénts an hour maximum. How does this compare with other places? Take patternmakers who elsewhere are paid as high as $1.25 an hour, machinists as high as 85 cents an hour and nowhere outside of King- ston less than 68 cents an hour; la- borers 45 cents to 50 cents clse- where, while in the drydock here they are paid 45 cents an hour and 44 hours a week at that. Its no use trying to whitewash facts, by quoting plece work prices, for facts are stub- born things to contend with some- time, and are difficult to hide. If the machinists were making 80 cents an hour before the strike, as the'article in a local paper of yes- terday claims, why not pay them a day rate at least equivalent to the poorest paid mechanic elsewhere, in- stead of expecting them to resume work for a maximum rate of 61 cents an hour, 7 cents per hour less than the poorest paid mechanic else- where, and who will shortly have his raté increased by the Canada Rall. way Board. ~The council desires me to state al-| so that the company has known for| | some time past that we were willing to arbitrate, even if the public did not. We are still willing to go before a board and have so notified every body in authoritq.--WM. HALLI DAY, secretary Metal Trades.
