But the an- swer is Aly d today by the experienced farm veterans. The var- i1ous product~of the laid is harvest- { ed to the be Iva Antags and the live stock are fatter shed await- ing the arrival of rural buyers to call and quote prices, never forgett- { ing to relate the deploraltfie condi- tions of the present markets advising the weary and d raged grower that the future indicated a further { decline. The farmer, not being con { versant with the true predicament of affairs, grasps the meagre offer. The! shark buyer, who is not known for this veracity, secures the desired { amount of his specialties and an- | nounces the date you are requested | to haul to the car door where he | ships:to the city wholesale, thence to | the smaller dealer, i finally to the { retailer. Lastly the consumer is in| receipt of it at some exorbitant price. Farmers, are you going to allow the! professional crook to represent you honest gentlemen in the capacity of law making? Kindly ignore party po- { litics, saver the old idea of father and son. Unite and elect your chosen can- | didate. Kingston, Sept. 15.--(To the Edi- tor): Being interested in the high | cost of living, like all good house-| wives are or should be, I read in the Toronto: Mail and Empire of Friday | | the account of Mr. O'Cennor"s inter-| | view with the mayor and market of- | ficials of Toronto. Mr. O'Connor em- | phasized very strongly the advantage ! for housekeepers in buwing direct from the producer. Now, it is a long | | time since I have visited our city | market. However, I determined to { do some marketing on the following | morning (Saturday), bein persuad- | { ed, through the Mail and mpire re- | | port, that it would pay me well for! | my time and trouble, Now for the | i result. I first looked for a forequar- | | ter of lamb. There was Jleaty of it | | offered for sale, price 25¢. per Ib. | The next item on my list was pota-| { toes: I enquired the price from sev- | eral farmers. Answers all the same | ed price of 70c. a peck. 1] i bought meither lamb nor potatoes. | { The former I had seen advertised tor | i sale by a local shop at 23c. and the | {latter article my grocer was furnish- | ing to me for 55¢. @ peck. I have | | concluded that the much-abused and | | so-called iniquitious Windle man is i not always to blame. -.--MRS. E. R. DANIELS. | | 1 | Very Costly and Perhaps No Better. | Kingston, Sept. 13.----{To the Edi- tor): I see that J. Galloway invites criticism of his proposal that the city obtain its water supply from Lobor- ough Lake, which is about 130 feet higher than Lake Ontario. This would give a pressure of fifty-one pounds if the water was not in mo-| tion in the pipe. But as soon as wat-| er flows at the rats of 5,000,000 gal- lons in twenty-four hours the pres- sure at Lake Ontario level, which would 'be useless unless pumps were used at the intake end. The smallest pipe that could be used would be thirty inches and would cost about $800,000. These bonds would re- quire $60,000 a year, which is more than the whole water works reven- ues. As to the quality of the water, what reason have we to expect the water to be better than that of Lake Ontario when {t is the drainage for a 3 large section of farming country and passing through swampy ground. : Yours truly, --T.
