As a result of the work of the Board of Health, many houses in the city which were unfit for habitation have been cleaned up and now pre- sent a very good appearance. Some time ago the Board of Health had Sanitary Inspector Carson make a careful survey and he reported a number of ®uildings in which people were living to be.in very bad condi- tion., The board realized that there were two things that could be dome. One was to close up the houses, while the other was to compel the people who owned the property to make the ne- cessary repairs. The board knew that if the houses were closed there would be no place for the people to go. so it sent notices to the owners telling them to clean up. On Monday morniag the inspector the Whig that some places which 'had been in very bad condition for some time are now in first class con- dition. The owners knew that the or- der from the Board of Health must be obeyed, so they made the neces- sary sanitary improvements. BE YOURSELF. Perhaps you see in some one else, The man you'd like to be-- Perhaps the garments that he wears, Just suit you to a "T"-- Perhaps his wéalth, his handsome face, His air of sweet content, Have made you want to copy him And all these things preempt. But, friend, when God made you and me, ' He made us to be mean-- If apes He'd wanted, apes He'd made, And placed us in a pen-- He made us in His likeness; To think, and act, and talk-- To have opinions of our own And not in "circles" walk. There is in us ability To be just what we will, But we must draw upon it, friend, If we'd get us the "hill"-- We are just what we are because We are content to be Like brothers to those "hairy men," Who live up in a tree. Read, ponder, think, reflect, Select what's best for you-- Don't handicap with precedent That whi h to you is true-- Then Jouve a part of "God's great plan, Nor bound dy others' pelf-- You are a man, a noble man, Because you are--jyourself. ~--W.
