The harbormaster, William Mec- Cammon, has been notified that about three weeks ago, a pontoon scow went adrift on the lake, and the local harbormaster was asked to make inquiries about it. He has no trace of it at present. % Potatoes Up In Price. Potatoes are still going up in price. On Friday, Anderson Bros. inform- ed the Whig that potatoes were sell- ing from $6.75 to $7 a bag and the chances were tht they would not be any cheaper. Jones, one of the oldest printers in Ontario and superinten- dent of the Guelph Herald mechnical department, is dead. He was head of the Whig job rooms in the early éighties, He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, one daughter, Mrs. G. W. Morgan, Guelph, and one son, B. Roy Jones, of Toronto. Securing New Positions, G. E. Ellis, B.A., of Queen's, now in Arnprior High School, will join the Ottawa Collegiate Institute staff, as teacher of geography an elemen- tary science. Mr. Ellis has had eight years' experiénce as a teacher and inspector, and is a returned soldier. Miss Elva Locklin, B.A., specialist In art, now in the Napanee Collegiate, also goes to Ottawa. .~ Died At Ormstown. : Dr. Peter McLaren, collector of provincial revenue for the district of Beauharnois, died at Ormstown, Quebec., on May 14th, in his seventy- nineth year. Dr. McLaren had resid- ed in Ormstown for forty-eight years. He was born at Lanark, Ont., on March 17th, 1842, graduating with a B.A, degree from Queen's Univer- sity, in 1868, and with the M.D.C.M, degree from McGill in 1872. ---- Is Out of Danger. J Dr. Currie, of Picton, who was ta- ken to Toronto Hospital last week suffering from a severe attack of blood poisoning in his right hand, is reported much better and quite on the way to recovery. A telegram from Mrs. Currie, Wednesdsy morn- ing, states, 'Doctor eut of danger and doing well." Delegates to C. E. A rare surprise awaited Victor Verdun, alias Arthur St. Armour, on leaving Bordeaux Jail | yesterday after serving six months®¥or burglary, when he ran into the arms of In- spector R. Nannion, of the Ottawa police, and identified Verdun as Ar- thur St. Armour, sentenced at Otla- wa to two years in jail for burglary in Ngvember, 1919, and while await- ing conveyance to penitentiary escap- ed from jail, using a sheet and a rope ladder which he had made in the cells. W. 8iritt, local agriciltural re- presentative, has just returned from an extended trip through the morth- ern part of the country and reports good progress witht the spring work. He has completed arrangements for the annual field crop and home gar- den competitions and finds that the interest of the young folks is very keen. The quality of their work last season was superior, demonstrating the great value of enlisting the Inter est of the junior farmer. While they get instruction regarding soils, fer- tilizers, seeds, etc., their work has the direct 'supervision of the local rep ntative who makes inspec- tions and the result is a practical knowledge of the work that all far- mers' sons ought to know. : Celebrated Silver Wedding.
