[Strand theatre in a delightful screen | 'comedy igi "TA ll-of-a-Sudden- | The title refers to the viva- | | cious little heroine. She is the daugh- | | ter of Mrs. O'Mara, widow 'of a | deceased scientist, and has accom- | panied her mother to Hawkhurst, | estate of Lord Crackenthorpe. The | nobleman 4s writing a book on | spiders and has invited Mrs. O'Mara | | in order to consult with her. His | | mother, Lady Crackenthorpe, how- | | ever, suspects that Peggy has designs jon him and summons her younger | | son, Jimmie, to divert the girl from | | her purpose. He succeeds so well | that he falls in love with her. In | reality, Peggy 1s trying to arrange a | match between -her mother and the lord. Mrs. O'Mara will not marry as | long as Peggy is unprovided for. So, | to promote the match, the girl pre- | tends to have wedded Jimmie and | follows him to his apartment in Lon- don to keep up the fllusion, Matters thereupon get into a complicated mess, but finally turn out happily for all concerned. Miss Clark's leading | man is Jack Mulhall and the cast includes Lillian "Leighton, Orral | | Hamphrey, and Eddie Sutherland. { The picture is a Paramount Artcraft | and was directed by Walter Edwards, --Advt. | | | At Griffin's, To-night will be the last opportun- ity to see William 8, Hart in his new | picture, "John Petticoats," which has | pleased everyone who has seen it dur ing the last two days. "John Petti- coats" is a new character entirely for William 8. Hart, but one in which he excels any of his previous. great suc- | cesses. A capable cast of players lend excellent support to the star, and help to make the picture one of the | best of this popular star's career. The fourth pisode of the serial, "The Lost City,'! is also on the same bill, and { evoked much applause from the audi- | ences, who were thrilled and amaged at the startling feats performed by | ithe wild animals of the African | fungle, particularly in the destruc- | {tion wrought by the mad elephant, | which runs wild through the village | tearing down everything in its way. | Nothing like this serial has ever be- | fore been screened, and if you haven't | seen the preceeding chapters make | sure to see this one, and you will not | want to miss any of the rest. A good | comedy picture and News Weeklies | complete an entertaining programme, | which will be given a final showing | to-night.--Advt. WOULD HAVE NONE OF IT London Conference Rejects Five- | Year Pastorate. Stratford, June 5.--The principle of extending the pastorate term be- yond four years came before the Lon- don Methodist Conference, and the conference would have none of it. | The issue came up with the recom- | mendations of the stationing com- mittee that certain ministers already 'four years on a circuit be allowed to return. Vigorous debate followed, and one man, Rey. R. J. McCormick, of Blythe, was allowed to continue for another year, because of the very | exceptional conditions. The constitu- | tionality of the extended term in this case is based on clause 156, section V., of the church discipline, which authorizes the stationing committee to set apart any field for exemption from the four-year maximum should the interests of the church in general be considered so to require, but there | was no unanimity of opinion as to the interpretation. WILL TEST NEW METHOD Police in Plane to Chfise Bandit in| Auto. New York, June 5--Just after hav- | ing been taunted by "Nicky" Arn- stein, long hunted in connection with New York's $5,000,000 bond theft] plot, when he returned to Manhattan | in his wife's automobile, under the very noses of the city's 11,000 police, | occupied with their annual parade, | the department today announces an | airplane 'bandit pursuit" demonstra- | tion for Sunday. In this programme a car contain-! ing a perfectly safe and reliable! "bandit" will rush out of town alcng a pre-arranged route from Riverside | Drive via Broadway to the polo grounds and the open stretches be- | yond. A police plane will pursue endeavor to "nab" the "bandit" w the 'chase' gets into the open. | and | hen | { PAINLEVE AT VANCOUVER | Former French Premier En Route to | China, Vancouver, B.C., June 5.--Former Premier Paul Painleve, of France, ar- rived h yesterday, en route to China, "The object of my mission," he said, "is to bring China and France closer together. We will act as technical and intellectual guides for the Chinese, and in turn we will take back some of China's culture." He is accompanied by prominent French educational and technical re- presentatives. Rev. Robert Smith, President. Kemptville, June 5.--Rev. Robert Smith, of Wesley Methodist church, Montreal, was elected, president of the Montreal Methodist Conf ce for the ensuing year at yesterdfy's session. There were five candidates for the' office and it required a second bal- lot to decide the election of Rev. Mr. Smith over Rev. W. S. Lennon, who obtained the second highest vote in the first ballot. Rev. Dr. E. I. Hart | minutes, the horse truck from the | upper station in 3 minutes and the 1N LIQUOR SMUGGLING The United States Authorities Believe Whiskey Ruriners Will be Busy. If the expectations of Dennis B. | Lucey, of 'Ogdensburg, United States | Marguerite Clark is coming to the | district attorney for the northern | preve true; channels among the more than 2,000 islands which turn the St. Lawrence river into a maze will be churned by the propel- lers of scores of power boats from now on, speeding across the channels with mufflers on their exhausts and dimmed lights, bearing good old Can- adian Scotch and other brands to the | scared shores of dry America. When Congress failed, last winter, | to provide a 'sum of about $1,000, 000 to enforee prohibition along the northern bordeg between the United States and C a, District Attorney Lucey expressed fear that a mistake had been committed, and that with- out an effective blockade smuggling would be rampant. "Probably the same force that has been hunting smugglers this winter must contend with the problem dur- ing the entire year." Mr. Lucey re- marked. "The work will rest on the shoulders of the customs depart- ment." = It is quite apparent that the Thou- sand Island region offers a lure to the thirsty or to the man with get- rich-quick desires, for liquor, rumor says, commands prices in keeping | with its welght in gold, and he who sells speedily becomes wealthy--aun- less he is apprehended. Hundreds of channels between the thousand of islands make it easy to {speed back and forth between the two countries in fleet power craft, and the presénce during the vacation period of scores of boats of all kinds and sizes would only add to the pro- blems of the customs agents in run- ning down suspicious parties. It Is possible for light draft motor boats to land at almost any point, and the river is paralleled by highways. Brockville Cheese Board. Brockville, June 5.--A total of 4,- 150 boxes of cheese were registered at the regular meeting of the Dairy- men's Board of Trade. The meeting was held according to standard time, | | and the buyers, who are working ac- cording to the Summer schedule, kept the bidding quite brisk. About 17 | bids, ranging from 28% c to 29%c, were made befdre any sales were re- » TTT TT gistered, and after a few galls at the | & latter figure, 3,570 boxes, comprising 970 boxes. of white and 2,600 color- | = salesmen ed, changed hands. The came to the meeting in a rather dis- | 22 gruntled mood, claiming that the price here iast Thursday was lower than any other market in Ontario. The Secretary-Treasurer, J. E. Wil- son, gave the buyers to understand that only a few more incidents such as last week would send the local board into the discard. SR RT Serbian Children Campaign. The above fund will open on _Mon- day next June 7th, when your sub- scriptions may be paid into your own bank or T. F. Rowland, the Standard Bank, local treasurer. The need of these children is exceedingly pitiful. They have sulfered beyond words to describe. Hundreds are dying through Tack of food and care. It is urgent help should go to them at once' if their lives are to be saved. Think of them {ll-clad, suffering hunger, eaten up with disease. Will you not help them. Their little hands are outstretched to you. A Test Fire Alarm. The members of civic finance com- mittee are satisfied that the men of the fire Ylepartmemnt respond to calls in good time. On Friday, at 10.36 p.m., a call was sent in from box 13 at the corner of Gore and Wellington streets. The moter arrived in 214 waggons from the lower station in 31% minutes. Police Constable Beau- pre, who was in the police station when the bell rang, was the first man on the job, . Trees For the Prairies.
