The boys and girls of the senior /classes assembled in the hall of Vie- | Loria school where they listened to an excellent address by Mr. Trotter on "How to Play Baseball." Mr. Trot- ter emphasized the spirit of fairness in sport which is more essential than merely winning games. "Mr. Mills, in a few appropriate words, presented the shield to the boys who have won it for the third time. This shield was baseball teams of the public schools of the city. J. G. Ettinger, principal of Victoria school, received the shield in behalf of the school. Knox Williams is the manager of this successful team and Frank Leg- gett, captain. The boys on the team are Frank Leggett, catcher; L. Pur- vis, pitcher; Teddy Jenkins, first base; Vincent Ginason, second base; D. Clark, third base; G. Macpherson, short stop; N. Davy, outfield; J. MARY'S CADETS MADE FINE SHOWING Congratulated by Inspecting Officer--Their Band One of Ontario's Best. The annual inspection of St. Mary's school was held in the armor- ies on Friday afternoon. There were eighty cadets on parade who had been instructed by-Mr. Carty, princi- pal of the school and the performance of the various movements by. the unit under the leadership of Cadet Frederick, reflected the greatest credit upon Mr. Carty's work. Cadet Frederick put the unit through com- pany drill and the platoon command- ers, W. J. Flynn and Jack Hiscox, showed that they®understood their work. Lt. Gillespie addressed the com- pany at the conclusion of the inspec- tion and gave an inspiring address in which he predicted great things for the lads as defenders of Canada and the Empire. They have reason to be proud as members of the Cadet Corps because the cadets made a re- cord for themselves in the late great war and were an honor to Canada. Tenders for the work are 'to be called for at once. This year the lake and river level is very low. half feet lower than last year and will go still lower during the sum- mer. In the interests of navigation it is essential that some dredging be done at once. particularly in the ap- proaches to the wharves. Prof. T. 8. Scott Resigns His Post at Queen's It is announced at Queen's Uni- versity that Thomas 8. Scott, profes- sor in civil engineering, has resign- ed. His departure is much regretted for Prof. Scott has been at Queen's since 1915 with the exception of a year in Halifax with the Royal Can- adian Engineers. He returned from Halifax last fall to take charge of the Highway Construction Course In the Science Faculty at Queen's. This course did not materialize, however, and Prof. Scott lectured in gineering. Prof. Scott goes to ville. for the summer to direct road construction work. Dominion' Life One of the Best. Feels That Dis- charged Men are Not Sufficlently Trained. The regular business meeting of the Kingston Branch, G.W.V.A. was held on Frid: evening, Comrade Connors, . On the platform with the pres were Comrades Ross, Sutherland, Gordon, Sargent and Mayor Nickle. Each was called on for a few remarks, and various to- pics of interest to the branch were discussed. Later in the evening they were appointed as an advisory and financial committee to assist and su- pervise the general business of the association. Reports were received from the committees, all of which indicatad that the work is well in hand in all departments. ! In the course of his remarks Ma- yor Nickle indicated the plans of the city council in the matter of getting the names for the memorial bronze tablets to be placed in the City Hall. On Friday aftermoom, eight sol- diers from the Princess Pats, arrived in the city and proceeded to Barrie- field barracks. They will attend the N.C.O0.'s course that opens at the Royal Military College on the 24th inst. and which will continue for pos- sibly two or three weeks, Repre- sentatives will be sent to take the course from all the other units of the pefmanent force, which include per- manent machine gun brigade, Roysl Canadian Regiment, R.C.H.A., R.C. G.A., and Roya! Canadian Dragoons. The class w.1l be a large one. The object of thig course is to bring all N.C.0.'s up to instructional standard, and nearly all of these selected are returned men. The class will be quartered at Barriefield barracks and go to the RM.C. for instructions each day.
