THE DAILY BRITISH WHIG RE eel LES + World of Sport WOLEE ISLAND WON OUT | DEFEATED LAKEVIEW IN FAST GAME ON TUESDAY | Lakeview, Pitcher Has, Big Run of Strike-outs in last of Game.-- Four Runs in First Innings. One could not ask for a better game than the one played at the Cricket Field on Tuesday evening when the Wolfe Islanders put it over {-the-Lakeviews by six-runs-toffive) Nothing appeared to mar the beauty | of the occasion, as they say in the wedding ,write-ups, but the particu- | lar beauty in this case was doubtful. | It might have been Spoor's batting i or it might also be George Beswick's | pitching, for both were pretty well | into the beauty class. Lakeview won the toss and went {on the field with Saunders dn the { box. The Wolfe Island boys went {after him fn great style, slamming { out five hits, three singles, a double and a triple. Four runs were reg- istered before the game was well | started. The Kingston. bunch came | of the field but might just as well have stayed on, unless they figuted | that they were tiring the pitcher. Score 4 tor 0 for Wolfe Island. i The Islanders started off the sec- ond with a hit but the hitter was caught in a neat double play. The | next man popped a fly to left fiela. | Lakeview went out again in fas. | order. Wolfe Island opened up again in the first of the third. Ryan and | Spoor both got hits, Spoor's being |a three-bagger. Both scored before | the inning ended. Their scoring ended there and the other team's be- | gan. © Saunders got a hit and was | brought in by G. Beswick's hit. Bes- | wick put out the side when he was | caught stealing second. Score, i Wolfe Island 6, Lakeview 1. | ~ Islanders went out fi the first of the fourth githout getting anywhere but they were touching up Saunders in dangerous fashion. In the last of the fourth L. Rice and W. Beswick crossed the platter for Lakewiew, making the score 6 to 3. | George Beswick went into the box | for Lakeview in the first of the fifth. | One hit was taken from him when | he first went in and from then until | the end of th game he allowed no kits and secured nine strike-outs. Starting in the first of the sixth he struck out seven consecutively until he came to Spoor in the eighth. -After Spoor had gone under on a fly to third he secured two more, which certainly was some perform- ance for even a hard worker. i The Wolfe Island pitcher held | steadily also. He allowed no hits until the last of the ninth, although a run was tallied for Lakeview in the sixth by G. Beswick. In the ninth, however, W. Rice worried Kyle for a hit and made it a run when Coul- son secured another. Excitement 'was fairly high with the prospect of the score being tied 'but the Wolfe Islanders retired the side before any further damage was done. Bagging 2 hit a day is keeping Tris Speaker, manager of the Cleveland | { Americans, is on top of the. heap in | the race for the American League batting championship. Speaker, ac- cording to average released today, widened . the gap. between himself ['erfd George Sisler, the St. Louls star. Speaker is batting .411, while Sisler, in second place fell off to .396. Joe Jackson, of Chicago, is trailing in third place with .395, while "Babe" Ruth, of New York, is fourth with -393. The averages include Wednes- day's games. In his last seven games Speaker crashed out hits, while the best Sisler could do was four in five games. Speaker excels Sisler In ex- tra base hitting, having seven hom- | ers, seven triples and thirty-two base bits to his credit. In home run hitt- ing Ruth continues to be the sensa- tion of the league with a total of 36 up to today. Rice, of Washington, continues to show the way to the base stealers with a total of 40. NEW YORK YANKEES GREAT DRAWING CARDS "Babe" Ruth Does His Bit In Luring Fans to Games. Baseball attendance records have been shattered in five of the eight cities of the American League during the current seasoi, and in another a record was almost equalled. In each instance the New York Yankees took part in the game. On May 29 one of the greatest crowds in Boston's base- ball history turned out to see the Yanks and Red Sox, but it was not a record breaker. A new high mark was set at Cleveland on May 13th and at St. Louis on May 20th, dur- ing - the - first "Western trip "of the Yanks. On July 5th, Washington's banner crowd looked on while the Senators defeated the Hugmen. On July 14th, a throng of 38,823 fans saw the Yanks and Browhs in a double-header at the Polo Grounds and this week Chicago's greatest crowd viewed the game between the White Sox and Yankees. With plea- sant weather prevailing next Sunday, Detroit may be added to the list. "Babe" Ruth, of eourse, has been {the main factor in drawing the crowds, but Babe can hardly be { classed as a novelty, as he has been in the American League since 1915. { | WITH THE GOLFERS | | | | "Bobby" Jones, runner-up for the {| U.S. amateur and the Canadian open | last year, is undoubtedly a wonderful | | golfer. . He just about created a re- | | cord when he recently won the Sou- | | thern golf 'championship by 11 up| {and 10 to play. Such a runaway vic- tory is rarely recorded in first-class | | events, although G. S. Lyon won the | | Canadian amateur way back in 1898 | by the same convincing figures. This, | by-the-by, was Lyon's first win in the championship and he had only been playing golf for a little over a year. | honors by 10 and 8. The famous John | Ball won the British amateur in y 1910 by 10 and 9, which is the most decisive victory ever recorded in that classic. In the American amateur and 11, and that probably is the worst defeat ever administered in a major championship. It is quite on the cards that "Bobby" may again decide to take another 'shy' at the Canadian open next month. He stat- ed' at Hamiltog last year that he would certainly do so. If he enters he will be a factor to be reckoned with. with his opponent to the tune of : The new Premier, the Honorable Arthur Meighen, like all statesmen | now-a-days, 'recreates himself at the | sowff." Mr. Meighen, too, is a very | keen golfer. The Honorable W. H. Taft, former President of the United | States, who has been appointed to re- | present the Grand Trunk System on the board of arbitration, that is, to determine the amount to be paid by the Dominion Government for the stock of the railway, isanotherstates- man who finds golf his chief recre- ation. Mr. Taft is at present at Mur- ray Bay with his family and is daily seen on the links, He is president of the Murray Bay Golf Club and takes a keen interest in the affairs of the club. The next big event on the Canad- ian golfing calendar .is the open championship to be held at River- mead, Ottawa, August 25th and 26th, The Rivermead course is reported to be in superb shape. Some 25 bunkers have recently been put in and the links now provide an excellent test of high-class golf. The greens especially are right up to concert pitch. A very large and representative field is anti- cipated. In addition 'to the profes- sionals of Ontario and Quebec, the pros. from the West aye coming down in full force and several of the top- | notchers from the United States will also enter, including Douglas Edgar, of Atlanta, the present Canadian open champion, who made euch a phenomenal score in Hamilton last year. A determined effort will also be made to secure the attendance of Vardon and Ray. Altogether, there is every indication that Rivermead, next month, will see a gathering of golfing stars never before equalled in this country. Chatham, Ont., was the last city to get into the golf game, but it is in it now with a vengeance, the club or- ganized this year having a large and enthusiastic membership.
