From a moving picture to a mov- ing picture is the history of Harold | MacGrath's widely read story 'The {Luck of the Irish," which comeq to the Strand Theatre next Thursday. While on a trip around the world in search of material for a new novel, {Harold MacGrath visited one of the | big Cinema Theatres of Paris. Dur- | Ing the entertainment a comedy was {shown in which only the feet of the !characters could be seen until the |tinal scene of 'the picture. The nov- jelty of the picture appealed strongly {to Mr. MacGrath and the opening | chapters of his book deal with Wil- {liam Grogan, a journeyman plumber, | whose only contact with the world {about him is through the window of | his cellar workshop. From this angle {he sees only the feet of those who pass by each day. - And so he falls lta love with a pair of feet. They passed his cellar window twice a day, and though he had never seen the face above them, he knew they be- longed. to a young, energetic, and he hoped, good-looking girl: An iin- expected legacy gave him a chance of realizing two of his ambitions--to see the world and ride an elephant In the Orient. On the deck of the Ajax, which was to take him around the world, he recognizes the shoes, and Ruth Warren stood for more than he hoped. The unfolding of the tale is filled with romance spiced with intrigue aplenty, and in presenting the story for the screen, Allan Dwan has preserved all the rich romantic charm and virile action supplied by the author, filming it in a lavish manner that is bound to receive the 'plaudits of all who witness it. "The Luck of the Irish" is presented by Mayflower Photoplay, through Rael- heart Pictures.--Advt. ---- INCIDENTS OF THE DAY. {Items of Interest Gathered by Our Busy y . Judge Lavell was called upon to determine what constituted a fair rent in a case at the division court on Tuesday morning, when Robert J. Carson sued Miss Beaman fo $60, the balance of an increase i rent, which she had refused to pay. Miss Beaman claimed that she was a yearly tenant at 300 University avenue at $30 a month, and conse- quently refused to pay a raise in rent first to $40 and then within a few months to $50 a month. It was stated that the sale value of the double house, of which Miss Beaman occu- pied gne-half was $5,600. The as sessment was $1800 for the house and $650 for the land. Counsel for Mr. Carson claimed that 10 per cent, on the value of the house was not too much for rent, but on the other hand counsel for Miss Beaman stat- ed that the exigencies of a housing shortage should not permit a land- lord to exact an abnormal rent. Taking all the evidence into con- sideration, Judge Lavell said he would not sustain the rental of $50 a month, but reduced the amount which must bé paid by Miss Beaman to $40 a month, thus giving Mr. Car- son $30 instead of the $60, which was the amount for which he sued. .
