This atter- noon when a representative of the Whig was in the village, he asked one of the members of the Ernest- || town township council why it was that so much road work was under- i way. He was informed that this spring the council, after considering had decided to abolish the statute labor work on the { township Jords, and allow the work to be doné by the township council. So far the change had been very sat- 1 | isfactory, which is shown by the fact that up until the present time the sum of $6,000 had been spent by the township council, exclusive of the county council grant in rebuilding be- tween $165,000 and $20,000 had been expended on roads by county and township. Three bridges will also bave been completed. . The members of the council have felti@or years that the Lg wiy of tending to the roads by te labor Was very unsatisfactory, because most of the farmers are so short of help theE1t was impossible to do the necessary work.
