LAA EEE EEE ES RR RR POE P RPI RP Pree bbe rer teen BLOWOUT PATCH IS DANGEROUS Only an Emergency Measure | mon Mistake to Keep Attached. Using a blow-out patch for too long a period is a common mistake and a I costly one to motorists. A bdlow-out patch should be used only as a roadside emergency. After | the emergency is past it should be | removed and a permanent section | 'built into the tire to enable it to give the balance of the mileage of which it is capable. When the patch is made to answer the purpose of a perman- | ent repair the warning of the tire in-! cident to contact with the road oauses the patch seriously to chaff the inside of the carcass. The result is that where a small and inexpensive | repair would have been sufficient if | taken in hand at once, at expensive | repair is now needed. the damage is beyond cure. The fact that a blow-out patch is not built into the carcass, but is sep- arate from it, increases its tendency to chew the fabric, creating friction if a permanent repair is too long neglected. The blow-out caused by bruise Is probably the cause. fabric is badly ravelled and torn apart, fabric separation is often the reason for it. The motorist who would escape this form of tire trouble should avoid run- | ning over broken glass, should guard against driving into curbs, into holes along the road and against rocks; | and above all, should have his tires regularly inspected by a competent tire surgeon. Even neglected punc- tures may be the direct cause of eventually cause blow-outs, If Carburetor Leaks: If there is a constant dripping of | gasoline from the carburetor, the float valve mechanism is not operat- | ing as it should. When the level of | fuel in the float bow! reaches the pro- per height, the. needle valve control- ling the flow of gasoline into the reservoir of the carburetor should shut off. If it does not work pro- perly, the adjustmen: should be checked up, and the valve and its seat examined for dirt or grit. Per- haps the needle valve is worn, in which case it should be carefully ground into a good seat. ..__ To Prevent Short Circuits. There is frequently danger of short circuits in the battery because of the fact that one of the terminals is lo- coated near the metal! handle used for lifting the battery. To obviate this it is only necessary to slip a short length of rubber tubing over the wire A the point where the contact might e. To do this the tubing should be slit lengthwise, slipped over the wire and taped firmly in place. It is 2 good plan to follow. this practice wherever there is danger of the wires establishing a short circuit. Truing a Wi Wheel, In truing a slightly misaligned § hand in chalking the "out" and wire wheel a close fitting wrench or parallel pilers should be used on the nipples, and the operation should be performed slowly and evenly. A 'wooden block serves to steady the pl on the wheel. . The general principle is that tightening nipples on the outer rows of spokes throws the rim in, while tightening those of the inner row moves the rim out. Nipples direct]; opposite those tight- ened sbeuig, be loosened about half as much. °° J Beware Sand Blisters. A small cut, especially in the tread of a rear tire, may permit the en- trance of sand, which will work into a pocket between the tread and fab-|. ric. Such a sand blister soon wears through and makes a serious tire in- jury, the cure of which might be vulcanization. ' To forestall this, fill all small cuts with gum. . Loose Rivets. Few owners examine the frame for | loose rivets, yet these often shake | loose and fall out.
