Should the convicts at the peni- { tentiary be deprived of all the little i} | trinkets which they possess? This is a question that has been ) following | that | | they had been refused permission to i} | keep little odds and ends they have] HUDSON SEAL COATS | gathered together during their spare | | time, and which they claim should | | not be put on the forbidden list. { There are .a number of convicts | | who are very clever at making i things. For instance there are many | prisoners who, while out on the road" on their way to the prison farm, have stones and have the peach stones. into | use to carry on the cutting process managed to pick up on their rounds. | Others have made trinkets of all | sorts out of piecesaf bone picked up { here and there on their rounds. Con- trinkets: are to be taken away from them they feel as if it'is a hardship | on them. A prominent resident at Ports- mouth drew the attention'ofa Whig representative to this matter, and stated that he thought it was a shame for the penitentiary authori- ties to deprive'the men of these little trifikets, "They cannot do any hanm. with thesé things," he said, "and'1 do not think they should be deprived of them. On the other hand, I think that a man who shows that he is very clever in this kind of work should be encouraged to do it and given a chance to, do more than this. This idea of keeping a man down altoge- ther while he is paying the penalty for some wrong doing is not right. I hope that the commission investigat- ing the penitentiary will give some attention to this matter." "MUTT AND JEFF' AT GRAND A Targe Audience Was Much Pleased With the Production. Friday evening, at the Grand Ope- ra House, "Mutt and Jeff at the Races" was played before an appre- clative audience. Everyone reads thelr exploits in the newspapers, and to see them in the flesh is a rare treat. They are funnier and better than ever. In the opening scene, they are found at the races where they have gained entrance under fals - tences and are enjoying thems dike immensely, After "Jeff," played by Jerry Sullivan, is suceessful in win- ning the race in which "Mutt" {Jack H. Alton), persuades him to take part, they decide to go to Mexico and many interesting things happen to them on the steamer and after they finally arrive in that troubled land. Mona Wynne, who played the part of "Carmentheta", was applauded dur- ing the evening for her singing and dancing. Edward Hayes, in the role of the gatekeeper at the race track, und the captain of the ship, also de- lighted the audience with his songs and step-dancing, George Woods, who took the part of "Jack Manly", lover of sports, has an excellent voice. The chorus consisting of ten pretty girls Is well trained, and is a credit to the show. The scenery also 1s first class. This company will give two more performances at the Grand, Saturday, at 2.30 and 8.15 o'clock. 'What Queen's Girls are Doing. The Dramatic Club have decided to play "Stop Thief," a farce, and the cagte was chosen on Friday even- ing, with Miss MacFarlane as {Nell" and Miss Montgomery as "Madge." Miss O'Connor has picked a squad of eighteen out of which the six| 'best will be chosen for the intercol- legiate basketball team. The prac- tises will be twice a week. The, name of Y. W. C. A. has been changed to Queen's Women's Chrls- tian Association. Mrs. Arthur Clark; the hon. president, addressed the or- ganization on Wednesday. The year games of ground hockey will begin on Monday on the cam- pus. Arts '21 will play Arts '22. Saturday's Market. The collection on the market place 4n Saturday morning rather out- thmhbered ast week's quota, but no erial difference in prices resulted. The fine weather brought more far- mers in, but many of them came as much for their own shopping as to sell. There were over thirty atito- mobiles standing on the market with produce. Soon the wagons will be an oddity and then we'll commence to watch for the aeroplane farmer. The prices did not give joy to the buyers. Butter and eggs still elung tenaciously to. t clouds. Apples were a little better but still high. A great business was done in potatoes 4s many householders are getting a | stock in for the .winter months, Annual Hospital Meeting. .
