"Open Your Eyes," the set i photoplay of love betrayed, under the supervision of states Public Health Service, at the Grand Opera House week. "Open Your Eyes" is ong the strongest pictures ever made, dealing "with social diseases, yet °it has real entertainment value in a story that thrills, interests, and then leaves a hovering thought behind ! It is a living, human drama of every- day American men and women, pos- | sessing great strength and sympa- thetic appeal, destined to be as po- | tent a factor in combatting the so- clal evil as was "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in creating the overwhelming public | sentiment against negro slavery. Jriefly, "Opén Your Eyes' is the story of two girls, both young, beau- tiful and innocent, just budding into | young womanhood. One finds her | mother all that a mother should be. | Her questions are frankly and sensib- ily answered, and subsequently she is! lie | | able to avoid the pitfalls that in the pathway of youth. The other, | less fortunate, finds her 'mother too { busy with social dugies to listen to | | her daughter's questions, and when i the lonely girl turns to companions of her own age for knowledge, she gets it at first hand from a handsome young rake. The ¢ontrast between | the careers of the two girls, one pro- | tected and shielded from the dang- | "ers that lie about her by a wonder- | ful mother; and the other 'going it | blind," as so many young people do {in life, makes a powerful and roman- | tic story, especially. when the "rounder," after betraying one girl, | becomes engaged to the other. Tais | situation leads up to one of the | | strongest climaxes ever filmed. No | {children under sixteen years of age | will be admitted.--Advt, i At The Strand. Scenes in Hades, said only to rival even the most fanciful of Dore's | famous drawings, have been repro- duced on the screen in Norma Tal- | madge's latest starring vehicle, "The | Branded Woman" which will be! | shown at the Strand Theatre Mon- | {day Tuesday and Wednesday. Be- cause of the elaborate nature of the | sets called for in this motion picture, | which was adapted by Anita Loos and Albert Parker from Oliver D. Bailey's well known stage play, "Branded." |the result has been an artistic triumph, In addition to beautiful in- | teriors for a private house in Paris | and the fashionable boarding schools | on the Hudson, are some remarkable | scenes in India. The scenes of the { Far East reveal an open market | place and a slave-block where Norma, as the heroine, is sold by public auc- | tion, with donkeys and natives in | picturesque costume lending a touch | of "atmosphere." But most remark- | able are the scenes in "Hades." One lot these represents a | (dream of Norma's, wherein she | imagines herself dragged down by | society into a hideous whirlpool, from which she is rescued by the man she sets : loves.--Advt. | Nel. At Griffin's, Norma Talmadge productions are always unusual. They must be for Norma herself is unusual. Her quaint and widely varied characterizations are at once the surprise and the de- light of her thousands of admirers. Many have asked why she was never given the opportunity of demonstrat- ing her very evident ability as a com- | medienne. The answer js simple. Un- {til of late a suitable vehicle of that i type had never been found. At last, however, she is to be presented in a comedy photoplay as dainty and piq- {uant as her own self. An enchanting love story, as delicate as gossomer, has been carefully woven into the plot. Here and there tense dramatic touches have been added. The occas- ional suggestion of tears only serve .the more to heighten appreciation of the chuckles and hearty laughs which follow in rapid succession. "She Loves and Lies" is the title of this delightful photoplay, and will un- doubtedly win many admirers for Miss Talmadge. A good programme of ar ded attractions are also on the bill fo- to-day, Tuesday and Wednesday, which is sure to please patrons of the best in motion pictures. Be sure and see our programme.---Advt. The Maple Leaf Forever, | Watertown, N. Y., Times. | The Dominion of Canada is deve- loping a nationalism which indicates | the complacency with which it ac- | cepts its position as a colony of Great | Britain. Canada is distinctly loyal, (and yet it is proud of its own na- | tionality and seeks to advertise it all over the world. Today we find the | Canadian Government Merchant Ma- !rine making the announcement that | hereafter a great maple leaf will be | placed as the insignia of Canada on |s}- the smoke-stack of every merchant | marine vessel, and every vessel is to | bear the prefix "Canadian," 'The { Canadian ship, Halifax," "The Can- adian Ship, Newfoundland," etc. All this indicates the rising spirit of Canada. It is not the spirit of Bourassa"s nationalism which would break away from the Mother Coun- try, but it is the spirit of nationalism which indicates pride in the affilia- tion with such a Mother Country, the | spirit which Kipling expressed when | he sung of the Canada that was dau- jress in her own.
