The inlet of the opening of the bo- dice is also of the same stock- inette, while the edges are bound with a hem of it also. The effect of the glint of colar at the foot of the skirt--also cerise stockineite---was very becoming. The simple little stitches were also cerise silk embroidered. It had the latest high-necked effect and the long sleeves that Paris has so taken to its heart again for tha present. The long line of the waist, attained hy the sash be- ing worn so low, is still fur- ther emphasized by the droop- ing line of the top over it, especially at the sides. Of course low necks are still worn on afternoon frocks and with still shorter sleeves. One could get an excellent effect by hav- ing this in dark blue serge and the same trimmings would go just as well and look very graceful, on sale Thursday. | The Song Shop 269, PRINCESS ST. Bath Road, Dec. 21.--Mr. Eller- beck is finishing the brick work fh his new house and reports a scarcity of materials. It will be a large and handsome residence, Although plac- ed in the centre of a field it cannot show up as well as if on Princess street. The Queen's college students of this locality have departed for their homes and we miss them pass- ing along the street. Preparations for Christmas are about completed and while this part of the city has very little unemployment we feel that in this, as well as in other cities a great many children will face cheerless homes this winter, Mrs. Reid and son entertained a few of his classmates at tea on Tues- day evening. As the boys are too far from their homes to visit them in the Christmas holidays this gives a pleasant relaxation for them. The school here closes on Wednesday, the 23rd, and a pleasant feature of that day will be a tree and entertainment by the scholars. Such things tend to cultivate a beautiful side of the oths erwise dull schooldays and should We encouraged. -- THE REVIVAL OF SUPERSTITION W. R. Inge in January Yale Review. But it would not be right to omit one aspect in which the in- fuence of the war upon belief may seem to have been wholly bad. At the outbreak of hostilities an able man made the prediction that the effect of the war would be to give a great stimulus to the lower forms of religion, and to inflict a severe wound upon the higher kind of faith. For some years before the war there had been signs of a recrudescence of superstition, especially among the half-educated rich. This develop- ment was probably due fn part to the growth of an anti-intellectualist philosophy, and a revolt against the tensi of natural science. The In one minute your clogged nostrils will open, the air passages of your head will clear and you can breathe freely. No more hawking, snuffling, blowing, headache, dryness. No struggling for breath at night; your cold or catarrh will be gone. Get a small bottle of Ely"s Cream Balm from your druggist now. Ap- ply a little of this fragrant, antisep- tice, healing cream in your nostrils. It penetrates through every air pas- sage of the head, soothes the inflam- ed or swollen mucous membrane and relief comes instantly. It's just fine. Don't stay stuffed- up with a coid or nasty catarrh--Re- pr war undoubtedly stimulated this tendency. Soldiers are always prone both to fatalism and to superstition; and many of our men are said to have carried amulets with them into action. At home there was a great outbreak of necromancy and spirit- nalism, which was supported by a few well-known men whose names gave authority to the movement. These pen were themselves suffering 'from bereavement, and a large num- ber of sorrowing parents and wid- ows followed them in a pathetic en- deavor to establish, by various forms of occultism, commurfon with the spirits of thdse whom they had dear- ly loved. It is difficult to decide lief comes so quickly. i ABLE REMEDY, D%® THOMAS' |ECLECTRIC| oO whether these beliefs have taken deep Toot in the popular mind or not. s The probability is that they will die down by degrees, except among @ small number who are nat- urally attracted by anything strange, " mysterious and exciting. Mrs. Martha Ogilvie, special cus toms officer, whose activities at Windsor port has aroused a storm of protes from many residents of city, resulting in an appeal . addressed to Hon. R. W. Wigmore, minister of customs, asking her re- moval, received orders to report to Ottawa for duty, apd left at once.
