(By Temple Manning.) Can you imagine a large store-- parable with the best tery? The mystery is a simple, good- humored sort of mystery. but to those there it remains a mystery You enter this store and make your purchases on the first floor. Per. haps you wish to buy something which is on the next floor, or perhaps you are smilingly directed to an in- | teresting way to leave the shop. Up a short flight of stairs you go, then you are directed to another flight of steps, and still another. You are always going up. Yet when you leave you find yourself departing through the door by which you en- A "'Step Street" in Naples. { tered, although you have climbed | several flights of stairs. In the heart of Naples is the mar- ket-place. It is a seetion of the city which is hilly. When th» old streets | were originally laid out, no one | thought of grading them. Indeed, in | those days cities were not planned. | Like Topsy they "just growed." So | the streets of some parts of this sec- | tion are bullt as illustration shows. To rise from a lower level to a street on a higher level, they are very broad 'easy' steps. Between the lower street and the higher thorough- fare there may be a difference of per. haps twenty feet or more. This rise is not negotiated by a short flight of steep stairs, but--as our picture shows shows--Dby a long flight of very broad steps. But one doesn't want to pass the lower end of the "step- street" when a heavy rain is falling and the water is tumbling down the cascade lke rocks whichy form the steps. In pleasant weather, for most Nea- politan days are sunny, and the sky is a twin to the blue bay, the step- streets are of particular interest to. the tourist. From them intimate glimpses of the lives: of the people of Naples may be had. These range from views of the family washing hung across the street to frank views of the interiors of some of the homes which border on these streets of easy steps, 4 | | ' I "NITS" OF HISTORY | By Mark Stuyvesant. » - -e The Clever Way Daniel O'Connell Won a Will Case. One of the storles that Daniel O'Connell, the Irish patriot, delight- ed to tell grew out his law practice, in which he was very successful when a young man. When he began the practice of law, O'Connell happened to be the ' "Your Share of It!" lawyer for a cow-stealer, who was convicted of the crime. He was sentenced to transportation for 14 years. At the end of his sentence the cow-stealer returned to his old home and happened to meet O'Con- nell. They began to talk about the trial. O'Connell asked how it was that he happened always'to steal pa: ¢ows, never thin ones. "Well, then, I'll tell your honor the whole secret of it, sir. Whenever your honor goes to steal a cow al- ways go on the worst night you can, for if the weather is very bad the chances are that nobody will be up to see your honor. Thé way you'll always know the fat cattle in the dark is by this token--that the fat cows always stand out in the more exposed places, but the-lean ones al- ways go into a ditch for shelter." "So," Q'Connell used to end with | one perhaps not so large, but com- i department | store here--that is shrotided in mys- | who don't set out with the definite in- | tention of solving it right then and | F ryt original cand more because you can h famous flavors: -- --Adams old-time Tutti-Frutti, a favorite for two generations. : --Adams su ness and z1p. --and a new Spearmint, developed by us, and finer than Spear mint ever has been. ; Sold everywhere cardboard packet. . --an Adams proluct, particularly prepared ADAMS » hiclets The Original Candy-Coated Gum - w The charm of Chiclets lies in their crisp, white candy-coating, so charged with flavor. One case An which O'Connell was interested depended fon its success upon proving that one witness was not sober on the occassion, but was drunk. During his examination of this witness O'Connell discovered the man's character. He was a man who was described as "half foolish with roguery."" "Well, Darby," O'Connell asked, you told the truth to this gentle- man?" - "Yes, O'Connell." "How do you know my name?" "Ah, sure, every one knows our own patriot." "Well, you are a good-humored, honest fellow. Now, Darby, tel} me, did you take a drop of anything that day?" | "Why, your honor, I took my share of a pint of spirits." : "Your share of it! Now, by vir- tue of your oath, was not your share of it all but the pewter?" . "Why, then, fear knows, that's true for you, sir!® The court was convulsed with laughter by both question and ans- wer. Step by step O'Comnell.brought out the truth that the man was drunk that day and, therefore, was not a competent . witness. Thus O'Connell won his case tor his client. A somewhat similar instahce of O'Connell's keeness was demonstrat- ed In a case ig which the question was whether a will had been signed by a conscious testator, or whether, your honor, Counsellor put into the dead man's hand to trace the signature. O'Connell ob- served that the principal witness, under the severe and repeated cross- examination, always returned the same phrase: : "There was life in him." -- ""By virtue of your oath," 0'Con- nell demanded, "did you not put a fly in the dead man's mouth In order | that you might swear there was life » as was suspected, the pen had been | in him?" O'Connell had guessed right. Pale with terror, the witness confessed his crime, and O'Connell won his case, .
