FO this | | historic ground, Methodism Swis first | | planted by the United Empir Loyal- | [ ists, before the i{terancy system be- | €an, the first preacher being a sol- | dler, Major George Neal, who preach- | 2d and formed the first class meeting n 1788. He was not kindly received, and accounts relate that he was pelt. | d with stones until the blood poured | own his face, Methodism of Upper: | -anada, at this time and for a num Jer of years afterwards, was con tected with the Methodist Episcopu -hurch of the United States, as estat ished by Wesley at the close of th evolutionary war. From 1791 unti .794 different preachers came along ach preaching where he could fin. tearers and form his converts inte lasses. Three years afterwards, cil :uits were formed, the Niagara ci uit taking in Lundy's Lane, wit. Jarius Dunham as the first minister #hd journeyed for miles from on: | vlace to the other on horseback Jreaching the gospel, Thomas White read, who followed, in order to react viagara from Albany in 1806, had « | journey of six weeks living on boilea wheat by the way. As the years vassed other preachers came until i he breaking out of the war in 1812, when many of the ministers stationed in Canada returned to the States. The 'old red meeting house" | In Lundy's Lane was built some time | after the war, about 1820. | A plot of ground of about two acres was donated by Charles Green, | a United Empire Loyalist, and at the | west end of Lundy's Lane the church | was built, which was one of the first | Methodist churches erected 4n Can- | ada. The 'old red me ing house' stood as a landmarg To Thany years, | | and was the scene of the meeting of | the general conference, when preach- ers from all parts of Canada and the | United States assembled there. | | Reaching conferences in those days ; Was a work of toil and danger--bne | preacher was drowned in the Susque- hanna river, while on his way to the | meeting. More than one hundred tra- | veling preachers assembled under the presidency of the American bishop, Enoch George. The public services | were largely "uttended, where six | years before these men fought on | | Opposite sides near this spot in the | | fierce battle of Lundy's Lane. hen | | the last day of the conference came, | the preachers brought their horses saddled ready to start. e.appoint- | | ments were to be read by the bishop | and each man without a murmur | would start for his new field, in | whatever circuit he was sent, | In the year 1844 a new edifice | | was built on the side of the present | building, but th who had se long worshipped ,in the "Old Red Meeting | House" felt that they were loath to | | leave it, and from the Year 1844 until | 1857 services were held in both { churches. In 1857 services were dis- | continued in the Red Meeting House | and held in the new church. John | Ker, who moved f Merritton to | Lundy's Lane, organized a Sunday | school, as formeriy the Methodists | met in Sunday school with the Pres- byterians. Rev. Mr. Dickson had charge from 1867 to 1860, and was | Succeeded by Rev. John Wakefield, | who conducted 'a revival meeting for thirteen weeks. In 1863 the church | was enlarged. In 1888 the church | | now standing was built, the old build- | | Ing being found too small. Rev. P.| Hobbs was in charge. The last ser. | vice held in the old church took place on Sunday, April 18, 1888, when nine | babies were christened. The corner- | Stone of the present church was laid | | May 24, 1888, and was completed ir | November of the same year.
