Many workers will make this appeal to you on Satur- day, May 7th. Don't turn a deaf ear to the taggers, but do your best for the helpless babies. Remember the date, Saturday, May 7th, The Menace Remains, Citizens are asking what the parks committee is going to do this summer about the sanitary conditions at the city parks. When council last year authorized the installation of proper equipment why is it that the menace to health is permitted to remain? The Shrink in Prices. The cheese on the Campbellford board sold on Thursday at 21 cents. At Kings'on twenty-one cents was re- fused and one buyer offered 22 1-2 cents on the street but this was like- wise refused. Another buyer inti- mated that he would give 22 cents but his offer was not taken. These prices it is declared will not be pos- | sible next week. AC Correction_ in Price. "In the College > BOOK Store's advt last evening the price of Robert W. Service's. new book, Bohemian," was quoted as $1.00, | whereas it should have read $1.60. The error was a typographical one, | and the Whig takes this first oppor- tunity of pointing out the mistake. The price quoted was far below the wholesale price of the new and popu- larsvolume of verse, Penitentiary Enquiry. W. F, Nickle, K.C., commissioner, who is presiding at the investigation into the conditions and management of the female ward of tke Portsmouth penitentiary, adjourned the hearing on Wednesday and has made an in- terim report to the minister of jus- tice. It is expected that the inquiry will be resumed upon Mr. Nickle's return to the city today. Writing Paper Prices Drop. Canadian paper manufacturers an- nounce a further decrease of from 1 per cent. to 20 per cent. in the price of printing and writing papers. In many cases this will represent a to- tal decrease of from 30 .,per cent. to 40 per-cent. from the high prices of last year. This further decline in prices cov- erg all grades of what are known as bond and superfine linen papers. Died in Toronto, Mrs. Christopher Richards, an old resident of Leeds county, died on Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. W. Tisdale, 216 Rusholme road, Toronto, in her seventy-eighth year. * Mrs. Richards, before her marriage, was Miss Adelaide McCrea, a daughter of Col. Hiram McCrea, who farmed near Frankville, She married Christopher Richards, who operated a general store at Frank- vile, and in 1896 they moved to To- ronto, Mr. Richards was for many years engaged in the insurance busi- ness in Toronto, retiring a few years ago. Cheese is evidently due for a sub- stantial fall from the war prices that prevailed all last year, despite thé fact that the starting price.this sea- son was 24 5-16 cents. This is shown by what is taking place just over the border in New York state. On Tues- day, cheese was bought in the North- | ern New York markets at 14 cents a| pound according to a report from Watertown on that day. Dealers re- ported that there is no market even at that price. A year ago ch¢%e was selling at the factories there for 28 to 30 cents. --p-------- Found Dead in Bed, John Blakely, a farmer, Chap- man's Corners, was found dead in bed by Mrs. Blakely, when she awakened Wednesday morning.
