(THE SWISS GLACIERS ¥ QUESTIONS FAIL TO STUMP COLLEGE GIRLS | | Wilson Seniors Find Them So | Easy That They Inspire Jokes. | New York Telegram. Chambersburg, Pa.--That college | glrls are better posted on non-techni- cal subjects than the average male' | student, and that they boast a real sense of humor as well, has just been { demonstrated here by members of | the senior class at Wilson college. | An informal examination including | 20 Of the Edison questions was held among the seniors and more than 80 | per cent, of them passed with ratings | of 76 per cent. or better. | If the senior class had not had so { many humorists, the rating would have been even higher, but several of the girls just had to inject a little fun into the test. To the question, "What state is the largest?" no less than six replied: "Matrimony." Other questions that inspired. levi- ty, together with some of the an- swers submitted, were 23 follows: Q.--From where do. ve get our dates? A --The University of vania, + Q.--<=What is coke? A.--S8even cents, including the war tax. Q.--What was Cleopatra? A.--Anthony"s sweetie, Q.--Where do we get from? A.--The circus. Q.--To what is the change in sea- sons due? A.--Good team work on the part of the milliners and dressmakers, What is perhaps the prize answer was made by one merry senior to the question, "What star is it that has re- cently been measured and found to be of enormous size?" "Fatty Arbuckle," ghe replied KEEPS RAM AT BAY WITH FRENCH HEEL Pennsyl- a" peanuts A - Woman "Defends Herself From - Furious Animal With Her Slipper. -- Chicago, May 26.--Enraged at the click of a camera among his flock, a 300-pound dm charged Mrs. T. J. Btahl, of Waukegan, a suburb, with such fury that it broke her right leg, Then ensued a desperate battle be- tween Mrs. Stahl, armed only with a high-heeled slipper, and the cirel- ing ram, while a party of children, with her, ran screaming for help. When neighbors came she had beaten the animal away with blows of the shoe, but was in a semi-conscious condition, Mrs. Stahl, wife of a wealthy real Ratate broker, and a friend, Mrs, O. Moore, went to the sheep pasture La morning to take pictures of a group of little girls with the sheep. The ram, the head of the flock, had been considered an especial pet. At the click of the camera, how- ever, the ram lowered his head and raced at "Mrs. Stahl in a fury, strik- ing her savagely, BRITISH GOVERNMENT BLESSING TD INDIA Internecine Strife Transforme ed Into Well-Qoverned, Peaceful Commonwalith. «- Chicago, May 26.--The British ad- ministration has been a great bless- ing to the masses of India, Rustom Rustomjee, former editor of the Ori- ental Review, Bombay, India, . told members of the Association of Com- merce at a luncehon today. He de- clared he was not a "servile apolo- gist" of the British government of India, but belonged to the constitu- tional opposition faction wuntil that party was captured by radicals. In explaining the government of India Act of Great Britain, by which an almost autonomous government is being formed composed of native leaders, the sp: said: ""To havé found a continent as big as Europe without Russia, three timgs as populous as the U 8., torn by constant internetine strife, with- out peace or settled government, and then to have transformed it within three generations into a well-govern- ed, peaceful, prosperous, democratic commonwealth of Indian nations, is én achievement without a paralle] in | the history of mankind, " he said. Volun- ARE MOVING FORWARD Advance of One of Largest Threatens to Cause Lake to Overflow. Berne, Mag 26.--The advance of glaciers throsdtout the Alps is caus- living in the high mountain districts, Thus, Allalin Glacier, descending from Allalin Horn, which is a moun- tain over 13,000 feet high, In the Zermatt range, advanced over 40 yards between August, 1919, and July, 1920, and is now advancing at an unusual rate. It has already ad- vanced so as to cover the only pass whereby dravellers can reach another valley. The highest point of the glacier has been spread so as to cover nearly four acres. What is alarming the inhabitants of the high Alpine regions near this glacier, which is one of the most im- posing in Switzerland, is that if the glacier advances much farther it will block the outlet of Mattmark Lake, situated at a height of 7,000 feet, and cause it to overtlow. Engineers are at present busily engaged in such a disaster. Scientists declare that this generation' has not yet had an opportunity of observing glaciers In a period of advance such as is now occurring. A The Loethschberg Glacier has ad- vanced ninety yards recently, the Schwarzenberg Glacier 77 yards, and the Biserten Glacier 115 yards. The lower Grindelwalk Glacier is moving forward at the rate of six inches daily, and 98 of the chief Swiss glac- lers, which are kept under scientific observation, are all advancing. From Grindelwald, which is the most ac: cessible spot from which to observe the movements of .the glaciers, a commission of scientists is studying them, and some United States tour- ists have come especially to see the phenomena. LOBSTER CATCHES BREAKING RECORDS Earliest Returns in Years Flood Markets at New London. --_-- New London, Conn., May 26.--One of the local lobster-buying agencies was forced to stop buying, the large number of lobsters being brought in together with the fact that it is too early in the season to find a ready market, being responsible for the temporary shutdown. Never in the history of the oldest lobsterman has the season started as early as it has this year. The month of May is ordinarily oply the first of the season, marked by small daily catches, while so far this month the catches have equaled those made in June and July of the past two sea- sons, which were the largest for several years. Despite the large supply, the price the buyers have been paying has been very good, running from' 20 to 23 cents a pound, Mudge Elected Clerk, Winong Lake, Ind., May 26.--Rev, Louis Seymour'Mudge of Harrisburg, Pa;, was elected state clerk of the Presbyterian church in the United States of America at the 133rd gen- eral assembly, He will take office April 1st, 1922 There were three Other candidates, but Mr. Mudge re- ceived 727 of the 882 votes cast.
