Toronto, June 2.--Increase in the | number of advertisements for school | teachers at this particular time does {| not necessarily indicate a scarcity | of teachers, according to department | of education officials in touch with the situation. It indicates rather that municipalities generall:: are ende- voring to ascertain what salaries are likely to prevail next term, what they will likely have to pay their Preseht school teachers to retain them, and at what price they can securc others. "There is no scarcity of teachers in Ontario," declared one official. 'Ontario probably is better supplied with good instructors than any other territory of equal population, only thousands of 'them are to be found in other professions. The annual | wastage in the teaching profession-- | that is, the drift into other profes- sions--is, roughly, 2,000 a year. And most of them would rather teach. They have been forced out by low salaries. No person is so well equip- ped to step out into another pro- fession as "he school teacher, and naturally, as circumstances compel, school teachers dd stey out." Departmental surveys just com- pleted show that average salaries for school teachers in rural Ontario have increased 31 per cent. during the year from December, 1919, to December, 1920. in urban Ontario, excluding the cities, have been approximately 25 per cent. This figure dees not in- clude statistics from the city of To- ronto, which would probably increase the 25 per 'cent. estimate to" over 30 per cent.' The average. salaries for school teachers in rural Ontario as at' mber, 1919, were: males, $1,059; females, $868. In the urban centres, excluding cities, the averages were $1,674 for males and $941 for females. While the department is very em- Phatic in its declaration that there is no shortage of school teachers actual statistics as to the situation Will not be available until September THE DAILY BRIT I wish the band and the 'dear | WRITES IN BREEZY WAY[ amo en sc oe | and former com- lunteer army, North Irish Captain | Cook had been ill for the last month | Since retirement he | [fl He was an ex- | [f twice married, || j years ago.
