Willard has been writing him for a year telling him he wants to come back. The big fellow never has lost the opinion that he could win the title back if he got the chance. His chance rests with Tex Rick- ard, and the king of the promoters says he will not sign him up until he has the assurance that the Goliath can get into condition, Archer says the big fellow can get in shape if he wants to, but he isn't sure that he wants to now. "Willard is sore now," he says. "He had his heart set on getting Dempsey last winter and the disap- | pointment was such when the match | fell through that he got into a sort of dispair. He worked hard for a whole year. Very few knew about it. When he was making inspection trips over his oil wells he would ride out alone im the buckboard and when he got to the side roads he would jump out and run for miles behind the horses. He knew it was the failure to get enough road work a Toledo that was his greatest mistake. "He was in better shape than he has ever been before last winter. He 'wanted to meet Dempsey on St. Pat- rick's Day at Madison Square Garden and he had all the confidence in the world in himself. "How .far,"" queries a reader, "could Ed Delehanty have hammer- ed one of these modern lively balls that keep outfielders against the fence and infielders standing on one ear?" - We have no way of presenting an exact answer, but against the com- bination of "Larruping Del" and the new ball, if we were a third baseman, we would think at least an extra mo- ment beforeedging in upon the grass to be set for a bunt. Delehanty and Lowe both struck off four home runs in a game with a less resilient ball, where home runs | were scarcer than they are to-day. So there is at least one old-fashioned record, even with better ammunition, for modern snipers to shoot at dur- ing the next week or two. "Only think of old Fitz," a ,fight fan writes, "with hands as big and as tough as Dempsey's are." We'll be glad to. But why not pass the same thought along to Jim Jeffries? James would get an even quicker reaction from the appeal. GOOD PURSE OFFERED. Fight Pete Herman. Bantamweight champion Joe Lynch is going to get plenty of money for defending his title against Pete Herman at Ebbets Field next Mon- day night. This will be his first real battle in defence of the title, which he took from Herman in a decision bout at the Garden last winter, and he has set a high price on his ser- vices. Lynch has /been guaranteed $40,- 000 for his end. This includes $2,- 500 for training expenses. Although the match will be held under the aus- { pices of the International Sporting Club,-Herman is the man who guar- antees Lynch this large sum. Her- man is to get 70 per cent. of the re- ceipts and is to guarantee Lynch $37,500, the club putting up the $2;- 500 expense money. Although $40,000 does not appear to be such a fabulous amount after the half million dollar purse of tha receat"Carpentier-Dempsey battle, it is the largest sum ever paid a ban- tamweight for a battle in this or any other country. EF BASEBALL GAME AT = S-- . "Henpecks" Deféat the Park Nine by 8--4 Score. A very exciting game of baseball took place on Thursday evening at Eastview "between the Married Men fcalled the "Henpecks" and the Single Men' called the 'Park Nine," which ended in a score of eight to four in favor of the "Henpecks." The Park Nine were good on the run, as they have often had to run from the old man, but the Dads were there with the club and after years of practice they found they could hit a ball as well as other things, and if some of them had less weight to carry around , | the bases, the 'score might have been larger. "Rhe Park Nine hope to have revenge in a return engagement next week. The dipper was passed among the spectators, but the collection was the expenses. Harry Breathwaite acted as' umpire, and handled a difficult job satisfactorily. The "Henpecks" were minus their star performer, "Phil" Burke, who was attending a meeting at Ottawa. Purchase's Real "Comeback. A successful "comeback" after wo years' absence from the race course was staged by Purchas»?, a five-year- old of the Rancocas stable. The racer, which broke down in the fall of, 1919 while training for a prospective match with J. K. L., Ross' Sir Barton in Maryland, won the six-furlong Katonah Handicap in 1.09 1-5, one and two-fifth seconds slower than the course record. - No Help at All It isn't much consolation to the homely woman to know that every mirror has a silver lining. ------ Much so-called love is only lip deep.
