Miller, principal of Charlotte- MOTHER TIED HER * CHILD TO THE TRACK Farmer Rescued the Little @irl Shortly Before Train Rushed By. Quebse, July 27.--The shocking treatment of a child by its mother at Ste, Anuné de la Pocatiere was re- lated here in a special despatch from that town to L"Actioh Catholique. The despatch did not give any names, but likened the case to that of the Gagnon woman of Lotbin- iere, who is now serving a life term in Portsmouth penitentiary for hav- in} caused the death of her step- daughter, Aurore. It appears that the woman ire- cently took a violent dislike to her twelve-year-old daughter, and, after inflicting cruel punishment upon the child, finally dragged her to the rail- way tracks of the Intercolonial line and bound" her to the ralls leaving her to her fate, The screams and sobs of the child attracted the attention of a farmer working in a fleld nearby, and he rescued her from her perilous posi- tion a few minutes before the train passed by. ~ When the fownfolks learned of the action they reported the matter to the authorities, who investigated the cage and found that the .woman had displayed evidence of insanity of late, and in consequence of her violent treatment of her child, had her in- terned in an asylum. THE CHANGING VIEW, We used to think it rained because we wanted to have fun, Out in the blossoms of the lane be- neath the glowing sun, And we were petulant and cross and whimpered all the day-- But now we view the rain that falls in quite a different way. A We ised to think the storms were sent to spoil our plenic date, And kéep us penned up in the house or right inside the gate, And we were angry all the time that things should go that way- But we have learned to view the storms qitite different to-day. And it is 50 in all things here that mark ott quiet life-- We see the wisdom, of the toil and of the pain and strife, And we hdve grown a gentler will and welcome all He sénds,. For now we take another view of Nature's destined ends,, We know for instance, that the rain is sent to fill a need, And not to spoil our happy day and make our spirits bleed, And through the larger purpose of His will and wish we know, The bleesing of the flying clouds as the sun's bright glow. -- Bautatayn Bard.
