That old scrap iron, metals of all kinds, rags, paper and such stuff has an actual money value that some- times runs pretty high, therefore this little reminder that Max Rosen is buying all that sort of stiff and pay- ing good prices for it. There is a scarcity of gold all the world over, and though this gold famine is chiefly attributable to the war, it, is a fact that the world's gold production had begun to fall off some years before the war. The output of the pin factories of Britain amounts to over a million millions of pins a year--a figure which would in ten years cover every town in the kingdom with a layer of pins several inches deep. But--there are times when those two little words are cheerfu] voices inspiring hope, casting bright reflec- tions backward from the future, nerving"S8ome man nearly down and out to get up and go on, No doubt industrial affairs are in pretty bad shape just now the world over. No doubt Kingston is feeling the pingh along with the rest of the world, / / But--cheer up, Kingston is more fortunate than most towns and it can't last forever. But--Queen's rink is to ba built this fall and that will help out con- siderably, Buf--twenty-five of the unemploy- ed men were given Work tearing down 'the old knitting mill on King street west this week. Bui--some-of the younger fellows have gone off to the west to get work which will tide them over until things brighten. . But--there are many men working on the new wing at the Genera] Hos- pital, while other cities have no such lifts to help them. . There are half a dozen cheerful little "buts" to start away with. If--the Locomotive Works should start up before winter things would be pretty good. If--many boats come in to be re- paired at the shipyard, things will be a little better. If--the Queen's University and General Hospital central heating plant is started this fall it will be a great big help. If--it rains a little more crops wil] be bumper ones and prices therefore lower and we'll all be able to see the Big Fair. "Il--Some of the people in town would only loosen up and get their money working instead of jumping over bundles to pick up straws, then Kingston would gro faster, al- though it is going ead without them if they do not. If--you just dig up the odd smile every ten minutes you'll find that hard luck isn't half as bad as it looks, We've a]l had more or less of it and A-gxin is one of the best helps going. rs Some sandstones will bend like pieces of india rubber.
