Wright. Born in Willlanisville in 1826, ten years before the founding, of the British Whig, now one of the oldest papers in Canada, Mr, Schermerhorn has liv- ed a happy and contented life in this vicinity and. wae never farth than sixty miles from the city. AJl.the attractions of modern life, automo- biles, theatres, the lights and bustle of the big cities, have been unknown to Mr. Schermerhorn who went as far as Trenton on one oceasion, but has never been in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or ther metropolitan cen- tres. J Working ih the open air. through- out his Mfe, living with a regularity of habits that is singular in the pre- sent days, Mr. Schermerhorn now is able to look back upon 95 years of pleasant companionship with friends that were near and dean to him, {Satisfigd with the amenities of an earlier and>pioneer age and never striving after the heights of fame and fortune Mr. Schermerhorn has been indeed fortunate in watching point of view, He has lived through the age of great inventions, the tele- graph, the telephone, the street car, the perféction of the railway, the automobile, the electric light and all those other miracles of modern life. He has see the rise and fall of dynas- ties, he has been a witness of the establishment and growth of respon- sible government in Canada after the Rebellion of 1837 and he has lived under five British sovereigns, George {1V, Willlam IV, Victoria, Edward VII and George V. Strange as it may seem, Mr, Scher- merhorn has apparently been content to let the world go on its way without grasping at every device that man has made for modern convenience, The venerable patriarch of Kingston has never put his foot in a railway coach or an automobile, and except for a trip to Wolfe Island on a ferry boat has never heen on a steamboat. "I'm alwayd afraid of the autos," said Mr. Shermerhorn, "You hear of 60 mafy accidents these days that I wouldn't get into one of them." » A regular life has heen responsible for Mr. Schermerhorn's advanced years, according to his own testi- mony. You see from what I have sald that I have a good memory." Indeed, it was rather remarkable to Hote with what ease Mr. Sehermer- horn recalled the facts of his earlier days. He was a sen of John Scher- merhorn, for many years a resident of Kingston. At an early age. the son turned to masonry and farming as occupations, He farmed near Odessa for many years and was a member of the Odes- sa 'Methodist church for fifty-three years being a regular attendant twice on Sunday, He recalled the methods of farming in his younger days, and spoke of the improvements from the time when he mowed with a scythe and gathered with a rake to the pre- sont days of mowing machines and binders. When potatoes were cheap he sometimes had to take them back- to the farm because he couldn't get twenty-five cents a bag for them and he once returned home with a four hundred pourd-hog because he was not offered five dollars a bundred | waight for it, | Bitter memories perhaps with the {recollections of seven dollar potatoes {and thirty cent pork of the wartime | still lingering in his mind | Mr. Schermerhorn worked at farfh- ing 'until he was elghty years of age at Odessa and has been living In Kingston for the past seven years, Today, three of his daughfers sur- vive, Mrs, Edward Frink, Oshawa, Mrs. Joseph Bower and Mrs, Daniel Wright, Kingston, and two eons, John, in Odessa and Frederick, in the United States. - It is doubtful if thers is another man in Kingston who has attained Livingston avenue, who | the progress of civilization for near- | ly & century with almost a detached ! The preacher explained that he wanted to lay a few homely founda- tion tpfiths before the people, The words of the first verse showed that there is no condemnation for true Christians as Jesus has finished the work of redemption, that He came on earth to do.
