When the Silas L. George cup race is sailed next August at Hamilton, Ont., there wil] be another club com- peting for the trophy, Captain Ben Barr Lewis of the Oswego Yacht Club having decided to build a Class R sailing yacht and enter the con- test, > For several months Captain Lewis, who is an enthusiastic yachtsman, has been accumulating selected ma- terials for the construction of his craft and this week the stick that is to provide the spar arrived from lower Canada and is being dressed down. The boat will be started as soon as winter sets In and will be ready for fitting out next spring. The Oswego Yacht Club has not been represented in the George Cup or the Lake Yacht Racing Associa- tion races in several years, but in- erest in sailing is being revived and the building of a George cup challen- ger it is believed will do more than anything else to rejuvenate the sport. Captain Edward S, Lansing of the Crescent Yacht Club, skipper of the Huskie II, which challenged for the cup this year, said today that he was perfectly satisfied with the per- formances of his boat and would use her as the challenger in behalf of the Crescent Yacht Club again next year. He was not satisfied with the spar and sails, the latter of which were bent on but two days before the races and fitted her badly. A new suit of sales will be procured for next year, and also there will be a new spar inthis craft. With the new dress the Huskie is believed to be the most formidable contestant there , will be for the George cup unless the new Oswego boat devei~vs some surprising qualities, . -------- be | Home-Run Making Difficult For Mighty Babe Ruth Babs Ruth should be able to break his 1920 home-run record this sea- son, but if he does he will not get the credit tht the feat deserves. Smoke [games in whick the Babe performs, it is not realized what a real great- Ress it requires in: the king swe tter to get a home run. : Possessed of a good eye and a strong pair of arms or,shoulders, it Is no great feat for an ordinary bat- ter to hit one out of the park, especi- ally in these days of ths lively ball. The majority of home rung result from a crack at a good ball in the groove. Ruth, however, seldom gets a swing at a good ball. He has to get hold of the bad ones, and therein lies his greatness, In the recent Yankee-Brown series; Ruth was passed twice by Urban Shocker. That, of course, is nothing unusual, but the comment of Lee Fohl, manager of the Browns, after the game, throws light on what the Bambino is up against, "Sure, I ordered him passed," Fohl said. "Any manager is crazy 'who gives that fellow a chance to hit in a tight plac With runners on kases In a close game, Ruth usually gets four served up to him that he couldn't reach with a fence post. Sowo pitchers, know- ing the Babe's Prapeasity to slam the bad ones as wall as the good ones, go almost to the extremity +f rolling them down like a bowling ball. This in large part explains why Ruth hasn't run away from his 1920 record. It was only fair to assume early in the sea- son, when the batters of an occas- ional single caliber were knocking the ball-out of the lot with great re- gularity, that Ruth would get about seventy-five this year. However, at the first of August he was just about even with the count of 1920. Many of'tfie fans are trying to fig- use why George Kelly, the giant first baseman, who started out like he was going to push Ruth for the season's honors, fizzled. It i§° not hard to explain. Kelly was not a flash. He has the ability to become a great home-run hitter, not as great, perhaps, as Ruth. Kelly plays on a club where team-play above everything else is demanded by the management. Ruth goes to the plate with a standing order to slug. Kelly has to do just what John Mec- Graw tells him to do. If the situa- tion calls for a sacrifice, Kelly has to lay one down. If a long fly is needed, he has to deliver. Except in cases where he. is first up on where there are two down and none on; he seldom gets a chance to take a good wing at the ball. The Giant club owners apparently believe that the glory of a pennant and the money resulting. from a world's series mean more to the team than the money that would result from an exploitation of home-run hit- ting. 3 Little Bits By virtue of a forfeit to Baltimore and three straight losses to the same team, Toronto Leafs are back in fourth place again.
