Many newspapers are estimating election results from different points of view, but generally they are color- ed so as to afford no useful purpose. It is necessary to examine the source from which parties derive their strength in the past in order to ascer- tain where they really stand to-day. There is only one party that goes into the election to-day with any semblance of a solid front against all others and that is the National Liberal and Conservative, or Tory party, but just how strong the party is will be determined only by the voting test. It has arrayed against it some of the forces that in the past united under the Liberal banner, but which are now broken up into three separate groups, viz, Liberal, tho farmer group, and labor. It was the combination of these groups that in 1896 placed Sir Wilfrid Laurier in power and returned him in 1900, 1904 and 1908. In 1912 the Liberal regime came to an end, and subse- quent events have broken up every link of cohesion that united the var- ious progressive elements to Liberal- ism. Liberalism, therefore, has suf- fered worse by the change that has taken place in men's minds through- out Canada than Conservativism.
