Contact With Ulti- Is it a force with them?" The answer is given by Mr. Fuller mate Consumer. himself, and to use his words, "why is our business good right now? Be- cause we are spending almost a hun- dred per cent. more money in adver. tising this year than we did a year 880, our sales force is a hundred per cent. larger, and our sales methods represent the highest degree of or- ganized effort we have been able to devise." | The people of Kingston and the | district around have doubtless be- | come acquainted with ' the Fuller | Brush Company, through the activ- {1ty of ita representatives in this dis- | trict under the supervision of Mr. | Padden, the local sales manager of | that large concern. | Printers' Ink Monthly, published |some time ago, a two-page article by | Alfred C. Fuller, president of the Odd Remarks | set forth the reasons why the busi- ness of the company during April, | 1921, showed an increase of 179 per | cent over the corresponding week of (April, 1920. The reasons given are [three and this is how the first one | reads: The common hen lays only an average of 50 or 60 eggs a year, 50 that it takes more than one common | "The consumer has money to hen to supply an ordinary man. { spend. In one sense this may be re- | | garded as the greatest reason of all. | There is no possible way for us to | be misled about this, because we sell |the consumer direct through our |own sales force and make no sales | through distributors or retailers. We therefore know, in spite of all talk of business depression and the unem- ployment figures printed in the pa- pera from day to day, that the con- sumer is buying and paying for his purchases, and our sales ure made, not to any ene class of buyers, but to all classes." This, from a man who should have his finger on the buying pulse of the country, if anyone should, is cheer ful news and information that can be relied upon. Although not the usual "profit- sharing, co-operative' concern, the Fuller Brush Company has some fea- turés along that line worthy of men- tion, No man on the staff, from the president down to the newest addi- tion to the sales force, is on a stated | salary, All work on commission and {each is rewarded according to his | merits and abilities, The salesmen receive the largest commission as they do the actual] work and have the smallest volume to draw from. The more a man sells the more he makes and the larger his bonus, for there are regular bonuses. The dis- trict sales manager receives a small percentage of the turnover of hie force. If he puts life and "pep" into his men and is full of everlasting suggestions, is, in fact, a live wire all | round, then his influence and super- ! vision is soon manifest on his men and he reaps the benefit. So. it goes on up the ladder until the president's chair is reached, each man, from bottom to top, working for all he is worth for his own good. No loafers are allowed to clutter up the smooth working machinery of the company. A minimum of calls is set for each BE Some people prefer idleness to diligence. Would they prefer rust to brightness? The two classes are somewhat similar when figured out. Labour 'men will tell their candi- dates for parliament "Get us work." "Work" would be a very good plat- form for the Labor party generally. Success is a thing that some al- ways think of in others never in themselves. The man who think of it in connection with themselves are the men who achieve it Down in Texas they ate operating oil well pumps by electric motors, Besides the tremendous acreage of tea plantation in Ceylon there are over 60,000,000 cocoanut trees un- der cultivation. . -- > When you smoke your favorite ci- gar you may be enjoying a product of the Phillipines as the "weeds" are regularly exported from those isl- ands to forty different countries, It is a significant fact that the Phillip- ines are also famous for the manu- facture of rope. ~ From January to Septémber 1921, the imports of Japan exceeded the exports by 300,0000,000 yen; a cor- siderable increase over the 'same pe- riod last year, ey x | A co-operative sé! for the marketing of poultry, which includes extension of credits to thd extent of $10,000 and the establishment of a killing station at Moncton has been approved by the government of New Brunswick, There are still a few men working at the Richardson Memorial Stadium finishing up there, A large number of the men from this job were tak- en en at the new Queen's rink as soon as their work at the stadium was over. To an outsider that sounds rather strange but its inter- pretation is "When will the Canad- ian Locomotive Company's Plant re- commence operations?" Here in Kingston, it must be ad- mitted, we have been a littlc more fortunate than most other towns in the matter of employment during this summer and fall. Extensive building operations have been carried on which have tided a large majority of the local unemployed workingmen over many months. But compara- tively few Kingston men have been totally unemployed this summer. Yet there is always the winter to be thought of. Common sense tells us that the building operations at present under way cannot last for- ever. The George Richardson Stad- ium has been finished. The work of tearing down the old hoisery mill was long ago completed. The Cata- raqui Golf and Country. Club's new home is fast nearing completion. The two big prospects still good are the new Jock Harty Rink at Queen's and the centra] heating plant for the Gen- eral Hospital and the University. | Work on these should last till the New Year. These two jobs cannot possibly ae- commodate all the men looking for work. Farming wil] soon be a thing of the past until spring comes again, | and no relief can be afforded from the rural sections. Thé" big hope, then, is the Canadian Locomotive Company. The question has often been ask- ed; Are the officials of this company bmaking any effort to secure orders or work of any description? In or- dinary cases, where a man operates a small shop, it is left to his owa free will whether his doors are clos- ed or open, his wheels turning busily or lying idle. But in the case of a company whose operation is so im- portant to the welfare of so many people, a company which is such a factor in the affairs of the commus- ity, the civic officials should make it their business to find out why this company is not operating. If the officials are making an honest effort to sccure orders then their efforts should be backed up by the city, and surely 5,000 odd votes should have some influence, If they are not pak- ing efforts to secure work for the plant, then it is up to the city coun- ¢il to find out why they are.so disin- terested.
