The defence worked exceptionally 'well and with a little more practice they can be fig- uréd upon as one of the best teams in the league. Sign ail writings carefully. Be particularly discreet in all social conduct. Those whose birthday it is may look for a successful and active year, They should sign all papers cautions- ly and be discreet in their conduct. A child born on this day will be active, steady and persevering, and yat should 'be well-trained to win the highest success. Monday's astrological map holds several baneful figures, with 'all of the major planets in active operation. The outlook is for troubled hours, with danger to some in the employ- ment of others, duplicity, fraud, dis- appointment, frus:rated plans, and all the ills that come through impet- uosity, bad temper and rash judg- ment. Notwishstanding, the finan- cial outlook Is good. | Those whose birthday it is have the | forecast of a troublesome year, which | they can avoid by patience, coolness, [good judgment aiid caution. I MAKES NEAT EDGE | 1 Datute | Many ways have been recommena- jed for finishing button-holed edges ot |dolllies centrepieces and other arti joles but nothing is better than the following: Cut just outside the stamped lines of scallop, turn the edge and baste with short stitches and buttonhola the scallop thus prepared. A smooth- er, prettier edge cannot be imagined, and there will be no raveling when it is washed. Instead of buttonhol- ing you can work double crochet. either plain or with picots, around the scallops. This does away wish the trouble of cutting scallops after they are worked. Unless the scissors are very sharp it is impossible to do clean, smooth work, and with sharp scissors, one |Is very apt to accidentally cut the piece. GOWNS AT TORONTO DANCE Mrs, Cockshutt was pleturesque in the season's modish black and silver, | Her black charmeuse gown had net | panels embroidered with silver flow- |ers, and a wide girdle of silver bro- | cade and a fish tall train of charm- jeuse were finishing touches. An arin- [ful of crimson roses was the only touch of color. An unusual number of smart matrons atteaded the schoo dance, and black unrelieved or with white or silver or grey was much the vogue. A stunning model of black chiffon velvet beaded with seed pearls was draped over a petticoat of silver lace with narrow flesh tra'n lined with silver. Vivid frocks pre- vailed among ti.e younger set, though the black frocks included one of chif- fon velvet adorned with monkey fur. Quaint picture frocks seem the fav- ored modes.
