The fishing industry of Canada is lone of great magnitude, only on Investigation that we real- it, the number of people working in it, and how vast its scope really is. There are about one hundred] thousand people of Canada employed | in the catching and processing of] fish and fully fifty thousand more are engaged In selling and merchan-| total population of the country. { This fact is quite astonishing in| { itself, but, when it is known that our slightly developed as yet, the tre- mendous possibilities of the tion are obvious. Could we but find produce, there would be room the employment of many times that number and millions might trace| their livelihood from humble fish. The vital part the industry in our national economy cannot be ignored, and it is the object of Na- tional Fish Day, February first, to focus attentian on it. 5 | From the capital point of view, we; {find that some sixty millions of dol- lars are invested in the Canadian] fishing industry, of which one half is in primary operations--hoats, nets, and fishing spear, and the other fif- ity per cent. in canneries and other {is an erroneous impression that our 'fishing industry is-controlled by for- eign capital but statistics furnish no As far as that goes, it would not be' amiss if a few foreign milions could be further introduced into the de- iveloping to a greater degree of the {industry, but, at the present time, it is Canadian controlled to almost | the last dollar. 'Fiji Gives Preference + To Canadian Products | BE { Under the new preferential tariff lof Fiji, which became Operative on January 1st, 1922, - imports from Canada and other part of the British Empire were given a preference of 1121 per cent. ad valorem in the | case of goods subject to ad valorém duties, and a preferential rate of fifty per cent. lower than the general list in the case of articles subject to spe- cific duties. As the free list is very limited, this means a preference on nearly all commodities. The only products for which a tariff prefer- | tain ofls and the liquid products of petroleum, not specifically mentioned in the tariff, on which the rate is 2d per gallon. Washing Machines, Washing machines are no longer an experiment. Predictions are al- ways made in the early production of most articles that they are imprac- ticable, a fad, or that their use will be but of short duration. Those pre- dictions were freely made corcern- ing the electric washer in the earl- jer days of the industry. Now the practicability, permanency and econ- omy of the washing machine is ac- cepted as a matter of course, For- merly a house-keeper felt that she needed to give an 'explanation when she purchased a washing machine. Today the absence of one from the home is usually attended by an al- ibi. NO WATER, Dry inhabitants of the arid contin-| ent of North America will shudder] at the sacrilege of what happened in| Tokio, Japan, recently. A severe earthquake hit the city and demoral-| ized thé water supply. The whole] system was tied up and the result] was that some 3,000,000 people were left waterless. In the midst of it all, and while the natives were drinking beer entirely, a severe fire broke out in a Ginza cafe, One of the countless Japanese eating houses on the thor- loughfare best known to tourists and visitors. There was no water with which to fight it so all the available beer, wine and sake (and there would be a lot available) was poured | on the flames. This strange happen-| ing would be hard to duplicate, and | would be impossible on this contin-| ent, to the sorrow of many. If Kingston's water supply went flat it would be almost as great a shame to pour the drinks from Thompson's bottling works on possi- ble fires. They are much too good for that, as any person knows who has 'ever tried them. B. C.
