This is an act that makes the butter fat content of milk the basis of value when sold to creameries, cheese fac- | tories and condensories. Strenuous | opposition has been raised by the cheese makers, and while some delay Was caused jn the enforcement of the law it is now in operation. It is c'aimed to be in the interest of dairymen to accept "he inevitahla herds. The fact that the averag: | production of the Canadian dairy cattle during the summer months | has not exceeded 38.500 pounds. | ghows the general lack of efficiency and intelligent direction on the part | of many farmeny. There are individ- ual cows that yield as high as 12,000 pounds and it is within the power of all breeders to so improve their stock as to conform to the Dairy Standards Act, and at the same time double production. The immediate result of the act is the maintenance of Canada's placa | onthe foreign markets for cheese which has commanded the top price. "The Humorous to the Last Degree. A film version of Mark Twain's famous novel, "A Connecticut Yan- fi kee in King Arthur's Court," was| shown for the first time at the Al- hambra yesterday.' It is a delightful, nonsensical fan- | tasy, humorous to the last degree. The principal character, played ad- mirably by Harry Meyers, is a Yan- kee of to-day, Martin Cavendish, who, .though engaged to a wealthy aristocratfi is in love with her secre- tary. While reading a copy of his book he is attacked by a burglar, - who strikes him down with a lance which he finds in the room. Cavendish, while falling, strikes his head against the furniture, and imagines himself attacked and taken prisoner to the Court of King Arthur, . He is sentenced to death, but threatens to take away the sus, and a8 a solar eclipse happily occurs he Is hailed as a great magician and ap- pointed Prime Minister, ; Later he gets into the power of the wicked Morgan Le Fay, and is again the British army, and three years with the Northwest Mounted Police. He is now seventy years of age and in his period of service under the British colors, Mr. Thompson was stationed in Scotland, Ireland, in the Mediterranean, im Canada, and the West Indiés. He has travelled far and has seen much, but through it all has remained hearty as many a man half his years. ' Mr. "Thompson lived in Kingston after retiring from the Northwest Mounted Police, and was'a member of a band of local musicians who played all over this part of the country, The urge to join the British colors came early to Mr. Thompson, and ho came by it honestly, for his father, 'when he was som, was serving with he 29th Worcestershire Regiment, In India, in the Punjab valley. Mr. Thompson was born about the time of the terrible Sepoy rebellion, tha' scourge of death that swept India, spreading death and violence in its wake. His mother died while he was still an infant, and he was cared for by the women of the regiment for in those days the soldiers detailed to service in that country took their wives along with them for they 'would often be away from , their 'homeland for years. The regiment spon moved "0 Bur- ma, where his father, who had been a sergeant-major was made provost- marshal. This was in 1856, when Mr. Thompson was about six years old, Mr. Thompson had some lively ex- periences with the Northwest Mount- ed Police and held the rank of senior sergeant in the Mounted Police.
