The social side of 'life was not overlooked by the garrison, we see that a lady lost a gold bracelet on her way from the theatre to the barracks ior which she offers a reward. The only schools mentioned are the Mid- {land district schools for the poorer | children, though we know that Dr. ;| Stuart had taught the soms of the wealthier people, a work carried on by George Baxter in the twenties. William Merrill was secretary ot the Midland district school society of which Rev. George O'Kill Stuart was president and the names ot rion. Richard Cartwright, Lawrence rier- chmer, Thomas Markland are among those who were trustees. Though the schools were undenominattonal the meetings are advertised to be held at "The Church", presumably St. George's, built for a garrison church and standing on the present site of the Whig office. Archdeacon George O'Kill Stuart, after whom five of our streets are named, was then rector and most of the marriages re- corded were solemniezd by him. Among the many curious letters to the editor, is one from a lady sign- ing herself "Observer," who com- plains indignantly of the "giggling and whispering of the gentlemen of which most of the congregation con- sists', which shows that even if their behavior was not all it might have been, the men of 1815 at least went to church. There seems to have been a library and there was a de- Jbating soclety which met at the Wal- ker hotel, and we find an advertise- ment calling the Masons lodg~ 6 AY. to celebrate the festival of St. John the Divine on Jan. 27th, 1816, Sam- uel Shaw, secretary. Another line left Ogdensburg and Utfea. Travellers are promised every comfort, 'good t )' experienced drivers and covered sleighs. A iong' list of unclaimed letters still lying at the post office fs published In every issue, signed John acaulay, post- master. "A Citizen" suggests that two!fire engines be purchased with a reward for the firemen who reach the fire first and we learn this was done. "An Advertiser" writes a let- ter headed "Latest from N. Bone- parte" telling the public that Capt. Burnie of the brig George Beckwitn had arrived from the Barnadoes, had met the British sloop of war, Dauntless, that had stopped at St. Helena. Napoleon Boneparte, was Ia good health. Several letters strongly object to trade with the United States one writer who says he is a gurrier and a tanner, says "These ver: people who would a short time ago have cut our throats are granted privileges they are not disposed to grant us." A death notice says that on April 24th, 1814, at Galway, Ireland, Tho- mas Wilkins died, in whose arms the immortal Wolfe breathed his last after Quebec had surrendered to his Majesty forces on 18th of Otcober, 1 LL". Editor's Troubles. The editor evidently had his trou- bles, he was innudated with poetry from sentimental ladies and from the amount he published evidently had a soft heart. His ink was not always reliable, he says, and In one issue apologized for the previous one, say- ing that "the evil" would be remedi- ed. Gananoque advertises "A private lodging house where people who wish to be retired from the noise and bustle™of a tavern can be accommo- dated with good beds and stabling.'" Andrew Bradish, proprietor, Many names, familiar to our ears are found among the advertisers, who made good use of the columns of the Gasz- |: y j@tte. Charles Stuart, sheriff, offers $100 reward for "a villian Young," late of the township Ameliasburg, who escaped from Kingston prison, where he' was con- fined for debt. Mr. Stuart, who had evidently spent the Sunday at Ernest Town, no doubt celebrating the Christmas communion for the scattered mem- bers of his flock. Sebastian Hogle is another name mentioned connected with Ernest Town and Nicholas Pet- erson at Adolphustown was an ad- vertiser. The trial of Barnet Beck- er for the . murder of his wife and his confession are in several numbers and the dping: confession of Joseph Bivir, executed at Kingston forthe murder of his daughter Mary, Sept. 4th, 1815, was for sale at the office of the Gazette. The contemporary papers quoted are the York Ganette, the Canadian Courant, the Montreal Gagette and the Montreal Herald, the latter announcing the arrival of of the Earl of Selkirk and his count- ess in Canada. KEEP LITTLE ONES WELL IN WINTER Winter is a dangerous season for the little ones. The days are so changeable--one day bright, the next cold and stormy, that the mother is afraid to take the children out for the fresh air and exercise they need so much. In consequence they are often cooped up in overheated, badly ventilated rooms and are soon seized with colds or grippe. "What is need- ed to keep the little ones well fis Baby's Own Tablets.
