CRAPS RUMMY BADMINTON | ON TO TO CRICKET RUGBY YALE WINS INTERNATIONAL BOXING, TAKING TEREE T0 QUEEN'S THO BOUTS Yale University boxing team won | ather the international boxing tournament | from Queen's at the Jock Harty Arena on Saturday night, taking three bouts to the two victories of | the Queen's mittmen. The big rink proved an admirable choice for the holding of the bouts and every move- ment in the ring could be seen fromi any pant of its vast interior, The crowd was fairly good for Kingston, but, considering the calibre of the events, was very disappointing, In ony other city the Arena would have been filled to capacity, even at high prices, and at the rates of twenty-five and fifty cents the seats would have been sold out a week ahead. Holmes and Hanna were the two winners for Queen's and Roberts, in the 145 Mb, class, made his bout so close to a win that most of the audi- ence called the evening an even break between the two universities. Two exhibition bouts precelled the main attractions and the boxing in the first event of the evening, put on by Howard and Tkachyk, both of Queen's wag better than some of the decision affairs, Howard outpointed fds man slightly, but was held to fewer points by the excellent cover- ing of Tkachyk, Perry and Connors, two old rivals in the 125 Ib. wrestling class of ' jQueen's boxing, wrestling and fenc- 7 ing club, went the full time alloted without a fall. Perry almost took the bout in the second period with a double arm-lock but Connors broke away with a supreme effort and wou, considerable applause. < 115 Pound Bout. The first international event was at 115 1bs,, between Lavietes, a long- legged lad with a hard punch, re- resenting Yale, and "Stubby" olmes, intercollegiate 118 Ib. cham- plon. Lavietes started oft with all the marks of a good infighter but it wae speedily seen that he was rather wild in his swings. ~ His blows were es did not stay in the spot they were aimed at. The first round was fairly even and the second slightly in holmes' favor. The last showed the superiority of the Queen's man without a doubt and the first bout went to Queen's, 126 Poun £ Rose, of Yale, and MacMillan, of Queen's, entered the ring next in the 126 1b. 'class, The first round was fairly even, with each sizing up the bos wi GET ALA STAR snippeo in secTions [vareermrefie EASY TOERECT SMSMIAMCCIRIIE A.COATES & SONS BURLINGTON, ONTARIO. "Mac" came back with some hard ones in both this and the third round but allowed Rose to hammer him for points too much, the Yalp man winning out, Mcllquham and Allen, two more old rivals at Queen's, gave an exhibi- tion wrestling bout at 135 pounds. Both worked hard, Mcllquham se- curing a fall after two minutes and fifty seconds of the scoond period. 135 Pound Class, Honk, of Yale, and Hol, of Queen's, met next in the 135 Ib. class. Honk was the more aggresaive mam, though in constant danger from the fast books and wicked uppercuts of the Queen's man, Holt took a lot of punishment but the bout was obviously that of the visiting boxer. Two "ladies," Messrs, Smith and Bigelow of the medical faculty, who were "disguised" in wigs and other things, put on one of those famous bouts in which a boxer contests with a wrestler, Each took a round at wrestling and one at boxing, the con- test being declared a draw. 145 Pound Scrap Good. Cary, of Yale, and Roberts, of Queen's staged one of the best scraps of the evening in the 145 1b. class. Cary had the advantage of height and reach on the scrappy Roberts and some snappy infighting was the feature of the bout, Most of the audience expected at least an extra round, but the judges decided in favor of Cary. . Stewart and Trietes, two more Queen's men, put on a good wrest- ling bout in which the Canadian 135 Ib, champion, and former interocol- leglate 145 1b. winner, conceded ten or twelve pounds to his less experi- enced rival. The first period was close, with neither one having much advantage, In the second Stewart secured a decisive fall after about one minute of work. -- Yale Acting Captain Defeated. The surprise of the evening came when Boult, acting captain of the 'Yale team, was defeated by Hanna, one of Queen's recruits this year, in the 158 Ib, boxing. The first round was even, with Boult showing him- self as a master of infighting, Hanna had a shade in the second, and in the third~won himself the decision by a swift whirlwind offensive, though he took severe punishment himself in the milling that ensued. The third round ended with both men pretty well 'all in" and neither seemed to | have a good punch left, so hard had they gone at it. Both men were given a great ovation by the crowd. Powers, an M.A A.A. man with the Queen's team, put on an exhibition with Dibble, of Yale, in the 175 Ib. class. It was a semi-burlesque af- fair, and it was apparent that Powers could have won easily had he so chosen, His footwork was beautiful - THEM DAYS IS GONE FOREVER 4 : i | N i =A eee EEE -¢ = : tT | SIZE &-A T YES YOU OLGAT TO PLEASE MNAVE _ A. Good sportsmanship predominated in all the bouts and was introduced by James Bews, physical instructor at Queen's, in speaking of the ex- cellent treatment received by the Queen's team on its visit to New Haven. He expressed the wish that these international contests might become annual affairs, Capt. Harvey, of R.M.C., officiat- ed as referee of boxing, and James Bews looked after the wrestlers. M. Preston, R.M.C., was announcer and 8. M. Huggett and 8, M, Husher, CDONALDS Cigarettes 8. i ----n-- -- also of R.M.C. officiated as judges. E. O. Slitter acted as timekeeper, "Billie" Hughes was given a spec- ial ovation for the work of his team, and "Bob" Anderson also came in for a share of the cheering, Hoppe After Title, St. Louis, Mo., March 27.--Willie Hoppe, former 18.2 balkline billiard champion, departed for Chicago after finishing training here for his match against Jake Schaefer, cham- pion, at Ohicago today, in which Hoppe will try to regain the title which he held for 16 years.
