J. W. Stephen. striking lesson on the necessity of using and developing the various talents given to each man and wo- man on earth, and the resulting dan- ger of losing these gifts from neg- lect, was given by Rev. J. W. Ste rhea in St. Andrew's church on Sun- day morning. The sermon was very appropriate for the occasion of the parade to the church, of the mem- bers of the Highland Cadet Corps of Kingston, and the minister delivered a special message to these boys, for their guidance through life, Mr, Stephen told the etory of the three servants who had been given five, two and one talents respectively {by their master, and of what use they had made of their money. While the firat two men 'doubled their wealth in a few years, the other, through lazl- ness and neglect, only could show one talento his master, and this was also taken away from him. So it is in our daily Ife, continued the preacher. Each one of us has some || talent or other, some more than | others, "but everybody is given at least one. Some have mechanical, phi- losophical, 'musical, social, business, the qualities of leadership, or some il | other 'talents, and these must be de- i | veloped, ' | It is a good thing to discover any talent, early in, life, as then the boy || or girl may, follow their chosen voca- tion in life, interested and happy. {| But this talent must be used con- It is the same with physical or mental powers --negleat them, and they will soon disappear or become useless. The spiritual talents, faith, hope and love, ll are also God-given gifts, and it is the { purpose of the Christian church develop and strengthen these wonder- | ful gifts. The highland cadets presented a very smart appearance'while march- Ing to and from the church, and lll many complimentary remarks were heard in regard to their parade, The | church was decorated with wild || flowers to mark Mother's Day. | THREE COWS SUFFOCATED | WHEN A STABLE BURNED Lively Fire In Rear of Royal Dr. DENTAL PARLORS 188 PRINCESS ST, KINGSTON Hotel After Midnight Saturday. ------ Three valuable Jersey cows were suffocated to death in a fire which broke out at 12.40 o'clock on Sun- day morning, in an old stone stable at the rear of the Royal hotel, upper Princess street, conducted by Pat- rick McKenna. The fire- men had quite a hard task to keep the fire from spreading, and spent about three hours and a half on the job. It was thought by a great many that the fire station wad ablaze. The station was certainly in great danger, as well as many other build- ings nearby. It fs understood that the city carrles no insufance on its fire hall, and if such is the case, this fire should serve as a warning to the civic authorities and point out that even a fire hall is apt to fall a prey to the flames in spite of a good band of fire fighters. The cause of the stable fire is un- known, It was going at a lively rate when the firemen arrived on the scene, and they worked hard to get it under control and to protect the buildings close by, but before the fire had been extinguished, the en- tire roof had been destroyed. The bullding is 100 feet by 30 feet. In addition to the loss of live stock, two tons of hay were destroyed. Telephone wires located near the fire suffered. - Mr. McKenna will suffer as a re- sult of the loss of the three cows. The property is owned by the Grim- aston estate. 1t is a wonder the loss was not mere serious as the stable is loeatnrd In & rather congested part of the city, and while the building was ablagse the sparks made thelr way to many of the nearby buildings and gaye tie firemen extra work. A calf was rescued from the burn- ing stable. It was almost suffocat- ed but came around all right after being given attention. exalt us, that i 28 SURE YOU BUY Taylor-Forbes Lawn Mower "THE WORLD'S BEST" C 8 of Nand complete ; and Power nes AT ALL LEADING DEALERS EVANGELIST MATHESON OPENS HIS CAMPAIH To Bring Christ to the Unsav= ed of the City of King- ston. : "I am the dnnointed of the Lord to preach this glad story of the gospel of liberty, this glorious gospel," de- clared "Billy" Matheson, evangelist, in the opening meeting of his revival campaign held in the Griffin theatre on Sunday afternoon, when he made an eloquent appeal to his hearers to join the saved. 5 After reading a portion frém St. John I, Mr. Matheson who hopas through the course of his stay in town, to bring Christ to the unsaved of Kingston, informed the interested hearers that his was straight honest preaching sent down from Heaven and which therefore should alarm no one. "God sees our ends from the be- ginning, and He is never surprised; He is only sad to think that we pro- fess to Love Him when we do not. There is nothing said or ~ done by man that God is not awdre of, for He searches the human heart, so that the wicked cannot seclude themselves. How He ought to terri- fy the world and the people who are fu living in sin.. The time was when Jesus came and sought men to re- present Him. I hope that we shall all now represent Him in the right '| way, as Hé is not here to represent Himself." God has given all that He might He might ,save us from sin, from the power of sin, and from the presence of sin. In speak- Ing of man's attitude to man, he sald, "You can form a prejudice, and in that way retard your way to Heaven. Don't get your prejudice without reason." The most wonderful collection of worldly goods count as nothing to a man, who has caught a glimpse of God" and the things worth while. What is better than knowing the Lord who came down from H.aven to save the lost? "I preach in the power of the Holy Ghost to save sinners, in the name of Him who said, 'I am with you al- Ways, even unto the end of the world." God knows when thére is deception, so do not hope to keep your sins from the eye of God. It is one thing to pray and another thing to mingle your prayers with the Lord 'Jesus Christ who is ever willing to answer your prayers. It God. dces not hear the wicked who is going to be saved? Ard we must £0 Uke Jesus to the homeless and the wicked with message of good cheer and goodness."
