A A IR AS ALL READY FOR | GREAT CAMPAIGN Ih £ E id 10 denM CRAPS TO CRICKET # Billle " Hughes Announces That He Will Soon Be Ready for Work. In a letter to a member of the Whig's' eporting staff, "Billie" Hughes, the efficient and popular lit- tle trainer of the Queen's University Athle'es, announces that, after a summer of varied experiences, he is in shape to start in on the long win- ter training work again and that he has received instructions to report at Kingston on September 15th, "Billie's" motto for coming sea- son fs "Championship Condition All The Time" and he intends to do his best to make the teams live up to that motto. He has been travelling around the various schools for train- jug this summer and has picked up the very latest discoveries of those who make a careful study of training. These new slants, backed up by "Billie's" Tong experience and his Jdndmitable way of handling the boys, will make the Queen's athletes second to none in the }ne of oppor- iunities to get into and stay in con- dition this coming season. According to the popular little trainer the Sault hockey team will be a strong one this coming winter and there is little truth in all the stories about weaknesses in that direction. Fro private information contained in hie etter, wo should judge that the Saul: will be stronger than it has Deen in years. All the old players will be on deck and there are a few new ones who will make the hockey world git up and take notice this coming winter, not the least of them being "Jack" Woodruff, former Queen's player, and Stan. Brown the great Varsity man, It will not be long now before the Queen's players will" be trooping in and then his friends in the city can expect to see "Billie" on the job again with the same old grin and "he same old pep. RETAILERS GIVEN BAD DRUBBING Lakeviews Swamped Mercan= tile Runners=Up in One- Sided Fixture. The Retailers, runners-up in the finals of the Mercantile League were 4° eertainly away off color last night © Lakeviews a good run for it. 7 when the Lakeviews gave them a merciless drubbing by a score of about 36 to 3. The game was one- sided and uninteresting from the yery start and the Retailers showed a surprising inability to make a comeback of any description. Once in & great while they would tightan for an odd play and show a flash of their old form but this was discount- ed on the next plays by ridiculous errors and wild throwing. The Lakeviews started the merry whirl in the very first inning with McWilliams throwing to them. They piled the hits all over the field, four- teen men batting and nine runs com- dng in. What were no! safe hitg to gtart with were allowed safe by the fielding staff of the Retailers. Robinson went on the mound in the second and they touched him for a bunch of hits and seven runs. Four more were added in 'he third, three in the fifth and so on ad infinitum. Retailers started to hit a littie more heavily in the fourth and tal- fled two. In 'he sixth they secured _ another, to compare with the five made by Lakeviews in the first part of the inning. It was unfortunate that the game developed into euch a farce for Re- tailers at their usual form could give They were certainly on the chutes last Lakeviews__ Bird, 3b; J. Finkle, a faithful employee, "Alfie" Pierce, steps out. This old Queens's rugby and hockey mascot is likely to be again seen at the university. Some membets of the athletic board will endeavor to place "Alfie." The stu- dents would like to see the old-timer back again. Last November, when Queen's rugby team was to play Varsity in Toronto in a crucial game, the Queen's management telegraphed back to Kingston to have the former mascot sent to he Queen City by the night train as guest of the rugby club. "Alfie" appeared in Toronto next morning all.decked out with Queen's colors, and his presence at the game put "pep" into Principal Taylor's team, for all that the crack Varsity players could do was to pull out a one-point win when they expected a walkover. Union State Control, Supervision of boxing in Michigan was placed entirely in the hands of the State Department of Public Saf- ety, the State Administration having abolished the boxing commission, headed by Thomas Biggon. Under the new arrangement, the State will ccntinue to collect a percentage of boxing show receipts, to pay super- visory expenses and provide athletic equipment for public schools, Dave Danforth, pitcher with the mystery ball, says there is injustice iu barring him from the majofs. He says that he has never done any more to a ball than rub it with his nand as other hurlers do. GEORGE AWREY GETTING READY Say He's Not Making Any Rash Statements, But Work's the Word. George Awrey, director of Athle- tice at Queen's University, arrived in the city yesterday and proceeded io make preliminary preparations for the athletic campaign ahead of him this coming season, He was ques- tioned by local scribes as to the truth of the statement credited to him in the Toronto Globe which said: "Queen's University is going to take the intercollegiate rugby champion- ship" or words to that effect. Mr, Awrey sald that he had made no such statement and that he was making no rash statements concern- ing the series this autumn, but that if hard work would count for any- thing then Queen's were going to make the other teams step this sea- sn. He told a Whig man that not a title was claimed until it was won and Queen's is not claiming anything as yet. He also remarked that teams coached by Mr. Shaughnessy and Dr. Maynard are not to be sneezed at by any chub. In regards to hockey Mr. Awrey had nothing definite to announce merely mentioning that he had offer- el to co-operate with Kingston hoc- | key bodies on a joint intermediate O/H.A. team and that nothing had been decided upon as yet, the King- ston officials not wishing to decide too hastily. + "Although Queen's | may not take the championship this year, we will have a good team and we are going to show the people of Kingston some Ge the best rughy teams and rugby games played in Canada this fall. We are out to work hard and try all the time this year." said Mr, Awrey, Even the sea, great as ft is, grows calm, BRINGING UP FATHER Toronto Rloists Lose. At Alexandria Bay, N.Y., the] Thousand Islands and Myopia polo teams were victorious on Wednesday in cup matches against the Toronto and Montreal teams. Thousand Is-| lands defeated Toronto for the Com- modore James H. Hammond Tro- phy, 13 to 5, and Myopia defeated Montreal, 8 to 5, for the Mrs. Lucy Hill Cup. Still The Most For The Money George Awrey, athletic director of Queen's University, arrived in the city yesterday to make the prelimin- ary arrangements for Queen's rughy season. Gene Sarazen, one-time caddies and open champion of the United States after /the last tournament, administered a defeat to Jock Hutch- ison, holder of the British open title, by one shot at the fourth round of the Professional Golfers' tournament at Pittsburg. "Shufflin' Phil" Douglas has been banished from organized baseball for all time for making offers to sell the Giants to an outside club at a stated time for a certain amount. Many of the Kingston sporting fra- ternity members are brushing up their points on lacrosse in prepara- tion for he game here next Wednes- day afternoon. The attempt to re-introduce la- crosse into Kingston by the O.A.L.A.. and the Deseronto and Cornwall clubs is daserving of every support. There is plenty of time for base- ball yet and those who think of a Central Ontario League next year | will watch the lads who are playing in the exhibition games at the cricket field this summer. It is expected that many of the "boys" will come home this winter | ana they should be rounded up for the C.0.L. team before they get the 'ravelling fever again in the spring. Don't think that it's what a man has that makes him contented--it's what he doesn't want.
