LENNOX SPLENDID FAR © HELD AT NAPANEE Large Attendance on First Day | --Flve Hundred Schou! Children March. { i Napanee, Sept. 12--A large crowd was in attendance at the Fair grounds all day to view the splen- did exhibits and enjoy the many at- tractions provided for the three days exhibition. The formal opening of the first dey, took place on the arrival at the grounds of the procession of school children. The five hundred public school cltildren assembled at the West Ward school about one o'clock pm. and there formed procession, headed by the Napanee Citizens Band and proceeded to the Park. These kiddies represented the town and county schools; four outside schools from the townships of Richmond and Camden were there. This success- ful parade was under the able man- agement of Messrs. M. C. Bogart, Alpine Wood and Principal Trenouth accompanied by a large staff of teachers. The Palace, or main exhibition ball probably Attracted the first at- tention of the visitor to the fair. On entering the building one was charmed by the brilliant and pleas- ing display of fruit and flowers which adorned the long centre table extending the whole length of the hall. There were some very fine specimens of apples and other fruits, and the flowers were also very fine, gladioll, esters, dahlias, zinnias, marigolds, fuchias, roses, etc. ets, being with each other for admira- tion, the whole forming the aggrega- tion of a blaze of beauty and color. Surrounding this fine display tastefully arranged booths proved very attractive. Beginning on the est hand was a fine exhibit of lad- es' work, then The Halmes Shoe store exhibit of boots, shoes and travelling goods; then Mason and Risch pianos, etc.; next comes the Art exhibition of paintings, drawings and other works of art from local tal- ent, all of which is highly credible to all concerned. The next booth con- tains a fine showing of planos and other musical instruments Dy Van Lyven of Napanee. Then an interest- Sng exhibit of Seman Kent Co., Ltd. represented by Arthur A. urls, Belleville, including hardwood floor- ing, etc. Next booth is occupied by of the Napanee Woman's Institute, which was instrumental in inducing the Provincial Board of Health to send Dr. W. J. Bell and Miss Oc- borne to take charge of the Clinic. By this time the visitor has arrived Lat the west entrance of the building and on either side of the door way will be seen in glass cases excellent specimens of homemade pies, home- made bread and buns, also butter and dressed chickens. Still continuing D. 'Nidener, manufacturer of lumber and builders requisites and dealer in British, coal. The Gibbard Furniture Co, Ltd., display of handsome black walnut bedroom suite. Roman Meal Co. Ltd., exhibit of Roman Meal Churchwoman's Guild display and sale of useful and ornamental artic- les. Hydro Electric Commission, dis- play of utilities. Davy and Allison, stoves and hardware. The Graham Company, clothes and men's furnish- ings. Thus the visitor having return- 'to point of starting finds another display of ladies' fancy work. In a tent nearby there is a grand display of grain and vegetables, which go to prove the excellent growth in farm and garden stuff dur- gated in every manner known to medical science. There is no "per- haps" about the following results of the competition for the judges were experts--Dr. W. J. Bell and Nurse Osborne, of the Provincial Board of Health. ' I ---------- DONNELLY SALVAGE PLANT NOW BENG DISWANTLED After Releasing Rapids Prince ~The Latter Vessel Worth $300,000. Montreal Gazette. The dismantling of the salvage plant used in the release of the Rapids Prince from the rocks ir the Lachine Rapids was begun Monday. Despite a strong southwest wind rising at times to a gale of thirty-five mdles an hour, the wreck- ing crew of the Donnelly Wrecking & Salvage Company managed to get two scow loads down the rapids and across Laprairie Basin t0 Verdun wharf during the course of the day. The first load was landed about noon and the second at sundown, The dismantling of the pulling plant will not take long, but its trans- fer to Laprairie Basin will be an arduous task, fraught with many dangers for the men emgaged in the venture. ter to convey the machinery to the island in the middie of the rapids, but the return will be still more dif- ficult owing to the lowering of the water, which has fallen nearly three feet since the grounding ' on: July 80th, The principal pieces to be brought back are & large steam boil- er, a huge eteam winch, and more than 10,000 feet of steel cable vary- ing in size from one-sixteenth of an inch to two inches. The disman'ling operations are in charge of Jack Kennedy, superintendent for the sal- vages. The river work is in charge of Henri Guerin and Edouard Guerin, La Tortue, who also headed the rafts- men during the preparation work of the last six weeks. It is also likely that the oak sheathing; six inches thick on the outside of the s'eel hull, is badly torn. Should the hull be extensively buckled, repairs would mean the stripping off of the sheathing and the plates, the straight- ening of the frame, and the replace- ment of fresh pletes and sheathing. I is understood that the vessel is in- sured for $180,000, but it is estimat- ed that she could not be replaced for $300,000.
