The gymnasium was visited to see an exhibition of physical training and gymnastics by the third ciass. {| Capt. Harveyp in command and then the visitors went out to th: square where an exhibition of arm | drill and infantry drill was given by the second class. Point Frederick's ramparts were next visited, where a glorious view of lake and river met the eye, and here marching along under the lee of the ragnparts, their pipes skirling gaily, came the college pipers, al! returned men. The old Fort built in 1846 was next visited, and the | guests saw the relics of~the late war gathered in the trenches, the old canon of a by-gone age, ovens, short shooters', rooms, and were || each given a grape shot made for the old guns, as a souvenir of this delightful afternoon. C. would never let it fall, The cadets sang a verse of "We'll Never Let the Old Flag Fall" and then General Ross spoke briefly, re- ferring to Canada's traditions and the glorious example of the heroes of the Empire, who have won for us what we know as civilization, After singing O Canada and the National Anthem, the party ad- journed to the officers' mess room, where tea awaited them and where many of the visitors had the pleas- ure of being presented to Sir Archi- bald and Lady Macdonell. Upon returning to the city, the party went to Memorial Hall where ex-Mayor H. C. Nickle showed them the fine hall with its roll of honor of the men of Kingston who fell in the Great War, and then turning on the lights of the memorial windows, explained their meaning to the vis- itors, who regarded this as a most interesting ending to a delightful af- ternoon. WITH CLOSE ATTENTION AD WITH INTEREST A Body of Teachers Heard Prof. J. F. Macdonald Dis=- cuss Poetry. The members of the South Fronte- nac Teachers' Institute were the guests of the Prince Edward County Teachers' Convention in Grant Hall on-Friday afternoon when the latter association arrived in the eity on an sacursion from Ploton, arranged as )art of their annual meeting. An ad- dress by Prof. J. F. Macdonald, Queen's University featured the afternoon ppogramme~in the historic hail, while various routine repor:s were also heard from the visiting de- legates, : Prof. Macdonald's address was an instructive review of "Good and Bad Poetry," and his remarks were Maten- ed to with very close attention and interest by the assembled teachers, He sketched the history of poetry from the old English period until the present day, and compared the works of various poets, some famous, some "|abscure, in our own and other ages. Scme sound advice regarding the reading of peetry was also given by the speaker at the conclusion of his address, Miss Helena Burns, a delegate from the Prince Edward Institute to Northern Ontario, gave an interest- fog report of her trip, corresponding to the report read by Mr, Ooegrove a* the South Frontenac convention. A Jecture of great interest to the teach- ers was given by Donald Crawford, his subject being the "Teaching of Fhysical Geography." Upon their arrival in the city, via the steamer Brookville, the excur- sionists were met by members of the South Frontenac Institute, and shown the principal points of inter- est dn the city, later being escorted to the University. There they were met by Principal R. Bruce Taylor, who welcomed them on behalf of Queen's, The party left the city at 4.30 o'clock in the afternoon after expressing great pleasure with their trip and the courtesy and friendship of thelr friends im Kingston. The officers of both inetitutes stat- ed that their conventions this year had been exceptionally successful, and with a Tovar] atendence, The inspectors of pub! ochools in the counties 8. A. Truscott and F, P. Smith interested guests during the proceedings of the two conven- tions, and were on the platform at the Grant Hall meeting.
