Dickson, postmaster of Pakenham for forty-three years, dropped dead in his sore a few-days ago at the age of eighty-five. His wife, formerly Miss Martha Heming- way, of Maitland, predeceased him six years ago and there survive three sons and three daughters. ---------------------- Returry'd From Ireland. Mrs. M. Burns, King street, re turned on Saturday from Ireland, where she has spent a two months' holiday with her relatives. On leaving Alexandria, where he has practised for the last fifteen years, Dr. N. M. Bellamy, formerly of Leeds county, wes presented bey his fellow-citizens with a travelling bag and by the directors of the Glengarry Agricultural Society with a silver-mounted stick. Dr. Bellamy is moving to Ottawa to practise. Death of Mrs. R. Ramsay. On Saturday last a highly respect- ed resident in the person of Mrs. Robert Ramsay, passed away at uaer home near Newburgh in the seventy- seventh year of her age. The re- mains were laid to rest in Newburg cemetery. Among those who mourn her demise, are her husband ani two sons. Long Threshing Season. A. McKendry and T. Kelly, Glen- burnie, returned home on Saturday after a long season of eleven wesks' continuous threshing. They repo:t splendid grain crops at Glenburnie and the vicinity where they were em- ployed. They threshed approximate- ly 25,000 bushels of wheat, oats and barley, and used a traction outfit 'entirely. ------------ Kingston Man Is Captain, D. J. Millan, well-known Princess street grocer, has an interesting photograph of one of the steamers owned by the Chicago Daily Tribune and used for hauling pulpwood for vaper manufacture, The vessel is commanded by Capt. Norris Kingston and is hauling coal between Oswego and Kingston during the fall sea- son, County Cases. A resident of Bellrock was on Monday morning tried on a charge of being drunk in a public place, Le- fore Justices of the Peace Allinson and Cannon and, upon pleading guil- ty, was fined $10 and costs. A resid- ent of Masonville was tried on a sim- {lar charge and was acquitted. A charge of assault was lodged against both of the defendants and they were conviéted, one being finad $10 and costs, and the other $5 and costs. The trial of these cases last- ed from 10 a.m. to 3,p.m., and a large number of witn testified. To Speak at Deseronto. Major-General Sir Archibald Mas- donell, K.C.B., C.M.G., commandaat of Royal Military College, Kingston, will be the guest of honor at the banquet to be given by the Deseron- to and District Returned Men's Club at Deseronto on Monday, November 6th, In celebration of Armistice an- niversary. An At Home, under the auspices of the Club, will follow the banquet and all arrangements are complete to make the celebration a | notable occasion. Two officers arrived in Kingston on Monday with Robert McGuire, who was sentenced at St, Thomas, to fourteen years in the Portsmouth penitentiary, on a charge of burglar- izing the home of Ald. O. E. Boeh- mer, of that city. McGuire is abeut twenty-seven years of age. Anothe: man % awaiting trial for having a hand in this burglary. To Make No Chany. There will be no change in the time for the holding of the nbmina- tions and elections in Portsmouth. The village will keep to the old dat- es, with the nominations on the last Monday of the year, with the elec- tions a week later. The question of changing the dat- es, in view of the act{on taken by the Kingston city council, to have the elections earlier was discussed but it was felt that there would be no advantage in making a change. An Indian Jal Breaker, One of the latest additions to the Portsmouth penitentiary is Nelson Miracle, who was sentenced at St. Catharines to two gears, and who is regarded as the allround prisoner, escaping champion lof Canada. Mir- acla, a mild-lqpking Indian, thirty years of age, has a wife. He twice escaped from Lincoln county Jail, once from Grimsby, and once from the Mimico reformatory. He has ser- ved terms for horse stealing and for infractions under the military ser- vice act, Entertainment: at Odessa. Several local artists journeyed to Odessa on Saturday evening and stag- ed a very enjoyable entertainment in the township hall before a large at- tendance of mausic-lovers, The King- ston people who assumed the stage name of the Foyal Entertainers, in- cluded Herbert E. Lyons, planist; Newman A. Pearson, tenor; Charles A. Gates, humorist; and Jack ElMer, Scotch comedian. The concert includ- ed solos, duets, monologues, plano selections, character gketches, and various vaudeville acts, concluding with a comedy sketch entitled "Ap- ril Fools." The audience was de- Hghted with the performance and showed their appreciation with a great deal of merited applause, The feature of the 'show' was the ap- pearance of Jack Elder, Kingston's Harry Lauder, in his new Scotch costume, with kilts, crooked cane ana everything complete, recently obtain- ed from the Old Country.
