AMUSEMENTS || hat the Press Agents Say About Coming Attractions To-night "Chu Chin Chow" Virginia Howell, engaged by Com-| stock and Gest for the desert slave! "Zahrat" in their magnificent produc- | tion "Chu Chin Chow" has been re- cognized for years as one of the best actresses of the country, having been associated with Otis Skinner, Nance O'Neill, John Mason, John Drew, the "Prince of India" and "Ben Bur." She was born in the grand old state] of South Carolina, and is a lover ot] out door sports. Twice in succession | she has been awarded the Blue Ribbon | in the State fairs of South Carolina | for riding and jumping, defeating eigh- | teen candidates at the last competi- | tion. She plays both the violin and pia- no. Her proudest claim is being a Daughter of the Confederacy, a Col- onial Dame and a Daughter of the American Revolution, with five bars to her insigna representing five men who fought in the Revolution for her country's freedom. She is a graduate of the Visitation Convent of Mount de Sales, Baltimore, "Chu Chin Chow," the first big spectacular production to come here tonight at the Grand Opera House. Rex, "Behind The Scenes." The Rex Stock Company's bill this week, "Behind the Scenes" is really and truly a departure from any other comedy that was ever written, because it is not only a comedy within a co- medy, but it is comedy of the tragedies that beset the life of the actor and the actress, the manager and producer of a new play. It deals with the trials of a young actress who is very much in love with a young well-to-do business can, and whose mother will not allow her to wed until she has had "her chance" on Broadway. Max Rosenbaum, the manager produced one play with her and it goes "bust,"". The third act shows a stage dress rehearsal in full blast at four o'clock in the morning, with everyone's nerves gone, and the stage only half set, the author having fits as each different scene is changed, and at the acting of the leading man, who is an amateur. In fact the young business man the Star is in love with, who, for the reason that he is backing the show, is allowed to play the lead. Rex plays the young business man of course and Zana is the Star, and Flor- ence Winters is her mother, and a real stage mother. Joe Kelly has another "Boob" part to play as the hotel clerk, while Bill Yule is going to surprise everyone in a new role, that of the lov- ing cla Jewish manager and producer. The.play, aside from being a side split- ting comedy, will be a res ation to tiwwse who think of "Behind tle "ye- ns" being the fairy land of Jeli;nt, "Rich Men's Wives" at Allen. Are rich men's wives to be pitied, scorned or envied? It's a question with as many answers as there are people probably, but in "Rich Men's Wives," the feature attraction at the Allen Theatre, .a solution is given. "Rich Men's Wives" is one of the best pic- tures that have been offered to Allen Theatre patrons, because it has all the elements that go to make reai enter- tainment. It is a strong story, with dra matic power that will thrill you, a play of to-day--the story of a social butterfly whose wings are broken on the Wheels of Jealousy, Revel y and Intrigue, a story big in them~, thrill- ing in dramatic action, charming in emotional appeal. The cast is one com- posed of real artists, including House Peters, lovely Claire Windsor, 'Baby Richard Headrick, Rosemary Theby, Myrtle Stedman, Charles Clary, Mil- dred June and others. A masterly pic- turization of a big compelling subject. Don't miss it! At The Strand. The cast of "Carnival," the impres- sive international screen spectacle, pro duced in its original locales by Har- ley Knoles, and released by United Artists, is "all star" in every sense of the word. This wonderful picture will be the feature at the Strand, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. First, there is Matheson Lang, who plays the princi- pal role, that of Silvio Steno, promin- ent Italian tragedian, around whose, picturesque character the dramatic story of "Carnival" is built. Mr. Lang starred in the original presenta- tion of "Carnival" on the legitimatic stage. He headed, recently, his own production, "The Wandering Jew," at the New Theatre, London, England, which was one of the biggest succes- ses of a decade. He is regarded as one Madam S.
