Amongst the inhabitants of some { of the more remote Fijlan islands in the South Pacific Ocean, ordinary money is unknown, its place being taken by plug tobacco; so many sticks being worth one pig or one wife, as the case may be. One day a trading schooner put in at Apemama Island having on board a goat, a beast never before seen by the astonished eyes of the natives. To please the 'king' of the place the trader made him a present of the animal, which, as is the playful habit of goats, had been accustoméd to chew up anything offered to it, even tobacco. "What do you feed it on?" asked the king. "Tobacco," replied the schooner's The civic fire and light committee jmet on Tuesday afternoon and dis- cussed the matter of better fire pro- {tection for Frontenac public school. In the government pound nets off Gull Island, near.Ox Point, was found |a three-year-old spring salmon, | weighing fifteen pounds and measur- ing thirtytwo inches long and 9 inches through. It is a light watery weed green in color, with eyes bulg- | ing, small and as if overlaid with gold leaf, fins thick, tail large, the back mottled with darker spots. The fish has large teeth and purplish grey mouth. Several of these fish have besn caught this season in the bay, weighing fifteen to twenty rounds. ¢ Charles McKenzie, a local artist, told the Ontario that this fish in the old days was caught as far up as the lower bridge in the Moira. It ds thought that lumbering and sawdust drove them out. The department has been depositing salmon fry here. "In four or five years we shall be able to catch these fish in the bay without having to go to the maritime prov- inces," stated Mr. McKenzie, who was engaged making some sketches at the government hatchery in Thur- lew. He recalled how the late Wil- liam Wallbridge had heard his father tell of buying one of these fish up- town, it having been caught by the lower bridge, the purchaser, who wag not a tall man, having to hold his arm high to lift the fish's tail off the ground. The scientific name of the spring salmon is oncorhynchus tschawy- tscha. In India the fish is known as the oye kato and the Salmon River as oye karone (the region of the sal- mon). The presence of this eplendid sample of fish is an illustration of the success of the work at the hatch. ery here which is in charge of Mr. Oakes, the spawn having been de- posited only three years ago. ---------- RETURNING SCHOOL TRUSTEES, ---- List of Those Whose Terms Expire This Year, The Board of Education members are '0 be nominated and elected the same time"as the mayor and alder- men, on Nov. 27th and Dec. 4th. "Take it away!" cried the horrified king; "I shall be ruined in a week!" The above is one of many good stories told by Col. T. R. St. John- ston, formerly District Commisisoner for Fiji, in his newly-published book entitled, "South Sea Reminiscences." The Fiji Islands lie almost exactly opposite England; so that -- as the author quaintly expresses it--if you put a corkscrew in at the Criterion | in London it would come out at Mac's hotel in Fiji. Owing to the strange geographi- cal position of the group, it is pos- sible for the dwellers on certain of the islands to sleep with their heads in Monday and their feet in Tuesday. Medical men in England just now are trying to impress upon parents | , the importance of not underrating the | danger of measles. In this connection | it is instructive to note what the disease can accomplish when it breaks out as an epidemic amongst a people hitherto immune from it. It was in 1876 that the complaint was first introduced into the islands, | and, finding a virgin soil, at once assumed an extraordinary virulence. In a few months it actually killed no less than one-third of the whole Fijian race, and in proportion to the size of the nation it thus became one of the worst epidemics known to history. Somewhere in Fiji there exist rich gold deposits, but no-one knows their whereabouts, for the natives are ex- traordinarily reticent regarding this one subject. Col. St. Johnston tells of the following remarkable incident. One day a trader brought him two specimens of quartz richly veined with gold. They had been hidden in one of a number of bags of copra (dried cocoanut) brought in by some natives; the object being, not to smuggle the gold, but to add to the weight of the contents of the bag, and so defraud the purchaser. The colonel himself tested the specimens, which proved to be very rich indeed in the precious metal. The trader at once began to make in- qQuiries as to who had put "stones" in the sack of copra, but the natives imagined a trap, and not one would own up, despite his offer of "nb awk- ward questions and a rich reward." And to this day: the iii a never been solved. Preaching by Practice. Pews by day that become couches by night may be seen in the church of St. Martin's-In-the-Fields, in Tra- falgar Square, London, England. For this is a church that prac- tices what it preaches, and, in pro- viding a night's rest for the homeless wanderers of the streets, it is follow- ing the old tradition founded round the name of St. Martin. 8t. Martin was the son of an ofi- cer in the Roman army, and, as a soldier, he served in France nearly sixteen hundred years ago. During one winter, when men were perishing of cold on all sides, Martin was in Amiens, and an old beggar, nearly dead with cold, approached him, craving alms. The young soldier's sole worldly Possessions were a cloak and his sword, but with one slash of his sword he slit the cloak in two and, throwing one half over his own shoul- ders, he placed the other half on those of the beggar. Later, in a dream, it was revealed to him that he had divided his cloak with Christ. That is the legend; and to-day St. Martin's Church lives up to it by car- ing for the homeless. All sorts enter those doors at night ---a strange contrast to the fashion- able throng who attend the services in the daytime---and a deacon or dea- coness is ready with a rug to cover over any weary man or woman who cares to rest in the pews. Throughout the night, in the dim light, an attendant walks around, passing with silent footstep down the aisles, watching over the sleeping forms. And only when the light of day slips in : the windows does this ho of' refuge become once more a house of worship. Spooning. . Several explanations have been put forward for this expression. Once it was the custom in many parts of the country for a lad to pre- sent his beloved with a "love spoon." FUEL WOOD PRODUCER TO CONSUMER, DIRECT.
