ACTION WAS DEFERRED OF CEB cl Waits on Civic Financial Committee. PS -- - The membbrs of the cvi¢ finance committee, at a meeting held on Thursday evening, had under con- sideration the request of the King- ston Kiwanis Club, that a grant of $6,000 be given to the committee having in hand the celebration to mark the the 250th anniversary of the founding of Kingston next summer. The matter was put before the committee, in an able manner, by a deputation from the Kiwanis club, but action was deferred by the committee. It is hoped that the committee will accede to the wishes of the deputation, as citizens in gen- eral are anxious to make the cele- bration a great success. The request ror a grant to a cele- bration committee was first brought up by the Kiwanis Club, and at once received the hearty support of the members of the Kingston Rotary Club, who feel that the city should do everything in its power to put over t celebration big. It is the opinion of the Rotary Club that the occasion calls for an elaborate cele- bration, of the character that wil make history, and that the council will be doing something worth while in voting a sum of money to heip meet the expenses of the celebration. The deputation from the Kiwanis Club consisted of Noble B. Steacy, the president; H. C. Nickle, W. H. Craig, J. M. Campbell and W., Y. Mills, It will be recalled that the Ki- wanis Club was asked by the execu- tive of the celebration committee to take the matter of a grant up with the city council, and although the Kiwanis Club have nothing more to do with the celebration than any other organization In the city, the members are very anxious that the money required should be provided for, and are willing to assist in the steps to be taken to secure fit, The deputation from the Kiwanis Club urged the finance committee to recommend to the city council, the passing of a grant of $5,000, to the celebrafion committee, which will be composed of representatives of many civic organizations, includ- ing the Kingston Historical Society, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, Board of Trade, Retail Merchants' Assocla- tion. Trades and Labor Council, Yacht Club, Commercial Travellers' Association and various other organ- izations. It is felt that the 250th anniver- sary of the founding of Kingston should not be allowed to go by with- out some special mark of commera- oration, and the co-operation of the Royal Military College, Queen's Uni- versity and the military authorites, has beén assured. In connection with the celebration, there will be, of course, on old boys' reunion. It is estimated that the celebra- tion will cost at least $20,000 and it is hoped to raise this amount by grants from the dominion and pro. vinclal governments, county council, and the city of Kingston. As to the question of whether or not the city can afford to expend money on the proposed celebration {t is pointed out that Kingston spent less money for unemployment than any city in the province, mainly be- cause of the fact that the Kiwamis Club raised $7,000 for this purpose, and this amount tided the city over the unemployment period. The chairman of the celebration committee will be General Sir A. C. Macdonell, president of the Kingston Historical Society. Successfully Repeit.ed. 'Some Jane" as presented at the Grand on Thursday evening by the Rex Stock Company may anly be de- scribed as four acts of continual laughter, as the plot.centred around the funny stunts of Joe Kéily as "Dave," the village lover, and Haze] Williams as "Lizbeth Jane." Of course, there was the usual part de- voted to a more serious romance, in which Rex apd Miss - Vaughn proved their rare talents in extraordinary roles. It such a thing is possible, the Rex players are improving evary week they appear here, and they never stage what might be called a "dead" performance or play. - The story has the Blue Ridge mountains as its setting, where the poverty and ignorance, the pathos and humor of the mountain people is always to the front. Even here in the land of moonshine ,as it I: some- times called, the residents are very human, and the tale of their simple lives is a wonder in itself./As might be expected in such a community, there are some who are continually striving to get away and see the life of the outside world, but when the real test comes, in the shape of live, in this case, it is found that the little, despised village in the coun- try, is much more to be desired than the gay, and sometimes articlal 1if2 of the cities. Such is the case in "Some Jane," when the pretty village girl, given a chance to see the outside world, and educated therein, through the gen- erosity of big-hearted "Jim Rad- 'burn, the .sheriff,"" known off the stage as Rex Snelgrove, came back to her home to find conditions there most distasteful to her senses. Th2 villain appears about this time, an elopement is planned, the sheriff in- tervenes, and finally the true love is discovered and everybody is happy. The antics of the village clown, who is promised the hand of his lady- love providing he lands a "job" are laughable. ; Joe Kelly and Hazel Williams da- lighted the audience with a clever vaudeville act, during the inter- mission. The same performance will be given on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening.
