Macdonald Is the New | President of the ; G.A.U.V. { On Monday evening at 205 Prin- cess street, at the old headquarters of the local unit, Army. and Navy | Veterans and the Boys' Naval Br!- gade, the new officers of the King- ston branch of the Grand Army of | United Veterans were elected. It Is ! reported to the Whig that these vet. lerans are now rid of J. G. Evans {and his chit lieutenant, F. E. Ling. { Dr. J. O. McDonald is the new | president. Judson Gimblett is vice- | president, while the duties of secre- tary and treasurer have been on- | trusted to William Murray and Al- | tred McCutcheon, respectively. This paper has also been informed that [the misleading signs which it re- | cently brought to the attention of ithe public, are to be removed. With Evans out the Whig can lend {ts support to the local mem- bers of the G:A.U.V. Evans was present at the meeting, and, In his usual smooth style, "paid his respects' to the Whig. He is no longer connected with the patriotic organizations under the cloak of which so much "Evans" aggrandize- ment" was made since 1914. Evans made his retirement appear voluntary, but it was sald before the meeting that a desperate attempt would be made to shut him out of the new organization. Although t Whig favors one-- and only one--returned men's or- ganization for Kingston, it wishes the local branch of the G.A.U.V every success. One present at the meeting said that Evans will vacate the building Dec. 1st. * JOHNSTON & WARD, Members of Montreal and Toronto Exchanges, 86 Princess. MONTREAL STOCKS. Rankin to Intro- duce Bill to Ald Island | Municipalities. i ! Anthony M. Rankin, member for | 'Frontenac, will introduce a bill at| the coming session of the Ontario legislature to provide for assistance to municipal ferries. In many island | municipalities throughout Ontario, the people find it difficult to get their produce to the mainland, and very antiquated ferry equipment is used. Mr. Rankin made a study of Brit- ish Columbia's ferry systems when visiting that province lately, and is of the opinion that the Ontario government should give financial grants to ferries just as it does to roads. While the Wolfe Island ferry steamer is able to about meet ex- penses, the people of Howe Island are not so well off, and a legislative grant yearly would be of great help.
